Caleb Dalton: My little brother has loved this series start to end. It seems to be a kids series that treats it’s reader with respect and doesnt talk down, covering some quite dark and complex topics, while still being fun and entertaining. I’ve loved hearing him talk on and on about the story, it seems it is definitely a good series as an intro to epic fantasy.

TJ: As a new dad, I’ve been on the lookout for book series to someday share with my kids. I came across S.D. Smith’s Green Ember books by accident and decided it would be worth looking into. Much of the newer children’s and young adult fiction I’ve previewed has struck me as shallow, featuring protagonists short on character, and/or having storylines that don’t hold up well to the lens of how the world actually works.
With the Green Ember series, I found the exact opposite. The storyline is captivating for any age. The characters are relatable and have their struggles, and the reader is invited to grow alongside them into maturity and virtue.
While this is a series targeted at children, I’m glad I did pre-screen the entire series first. The first book was very tame and could be read to a younger child, but with each successive book the themes do get darker and more appropriate for slightly older children.
To take one example, S.D. Smith does a fantastic job of capturing the excitement and adrenaline of his battle scenes without using gory language, but things do get a bit more graphic in books 3 and 4. Where books 1 and 2 mostly used the language of “so-and-so...

Alanna: A thrilling and compelling story- I read the series before reading to my kids and was totally hooked! A bit too intense for my younger kiddos but will be on our read aloud list as they grow older.

Toasty: You know you’re on to a winner when your kids are begging you to read to them throughout the day. I honestly couldn’t read it fast enough and had a constant personal struggle not to read ahead and finish without them! But I didn’t, and it was so worth it, to finish it together and share the tears and smiles together along the way. A satisfying end to a series that I know all my kids will read again over the years to come. My only question is... what do we read now?!

Rebecca Holsapple: This book, all in all, was decently written, and, I'm sure my brother and sister will like it, although I may not have. The plot wasn't particularly memorable, and, after the third book, I couldn't remember what was supposed to be happening, or who on Earth some of these people were supposed to be. I may have been more interested in figuring that out than in the actual plot.

I will say that he does share some of Tolkien's writing, not necessarily the long, beautiful prosey bit, but instead a whole lot of the plot. I had just been on "The Lord of the Rings" and was reading this because I had read the previous books, and saw many suspicious character resemblances, such as the Pilgrim, to Gandalf/Strider. Gandalf, by the way, is known as "The gray wanderer" makes me wonder... Throughout the entire book I am sitting there, seeing repeated Tolkien copies, for instance how repeatedly he does Tolkien's "death thing." I almost expected Smalls to say "I was Smalls the Gray, now I am Smalls the White! Take that Saruman!"

Now that I have said that, the book is written well, minus a few more annoying plot holes, for example, study ecology for two minutes, thinking "Mending" the...
