This is what they used to call the weekly treatment, and it can substitute as a water change in an emergency, just double the normal change the following week. It's a capful per gallon and it's great for getting rid of harmful chemicals in the tank.
If you have an overpopulated tank (which can happen when you have guppies or the like that make a lot of babies) this can help keep the ammonia under control.
It you have a lot of plants and are culling some for being overgrown, adding this is helpful to keep everything in balance.
It's a must-have for any aquarist.
