Brainy Product Reviewer: I feel it is important to note the package arrived over a month late and I feel this was due to the shipper printing a very bad label for mailing, partially cutoff missing text. I don't know how the postal system ever managed to deliver it, but they did thankfully.

So other than the shipping, not much to say. This product does as intended, leaves a little dimple in what you actuate it on for easy drilling.

Reuben: I've been looking at punches like this for years but never pulled the trigger. After needing to drill a bunch of holes in metal, I decided to go ahead and try this one out. It's worked great through hundreds of holes, though the handle does loosen over time and needs to be retightened which is easy to do. Much easier and more accurate than using a nail, awl, or nail set like I did for years.

Doug: Product arrived in a timely manner and presented as described in the product description. This is the second center punch I have purchased. I wore out the first one and had to replace it. The punch is especially useful when you are holding material in position with one hand and only have your remaining hand to center punch for drilling etc. The only difficulty I've had with it is that a fairly substantial amount of pressure has to be applied to trip the internal hammer. That can be a little tricky if you're not working on a very solid surface. Nevertheless, it is a useful tool for most applications requiring a center punch.

Michigan Industrial Tools contacted me the day after my 1-star review and offered to send me a new one after verifying my purchase with a photo. The new punch looks the same on the outside, but the spring and hammer pieces look slightly different. One huge improvement is that the new punch works! So I am upgrading the review to 5 stars. If I was the seller, I would stop shipping the old malfunctioning ones, since that would only tarnish the seller's reputation. BTW both the new and old version were made in China.

Old Review: I was able to mark about 4 holes in wood (by hand!) before it started failing. Less than 60 seconds of working time. The reviews say the manufacture has a lifetime warranty and there was a bad batch that was sold. It seems I received a bad one. If the manufacturer can provide me with a working replacement I will update the score accordingly.

Utah Guy: I didn't know I needed one of these until I had one. So much easier to center-mark your holes for drilling with one of these, as opposed to a static punch that you hit with a hammer. I was skeptical that this little springloaded gizmo would actually make a mark in mild steel, but it certainly does the job, and does it well. I don't have a more expensive name-brand version of one of these to compare it to, but I see nothing wrong with this one and no reason to dock any stars.

And I've been impressed in general with the Tekton tools I've ordered here on Amazon. The price is always right, and I haven't had anything fail on me yet that wasn't my fault (note that I'm a garage hobbyist, not a professional, my tools see light use). I'll keep buying until they give me a reason not to.

Jack: Just received this yesterday so can't comment on it's long term reliability, but I can comment on it's build quality. Like most here, mine didn't work at all when first received, just wouldn't fire when pressure was applied. Took it apart and found that that the "slug" at the non tip end beneath the spring was installed incorrectly, with the hole facing the wrong way. Turned it around, replaced the long spring, put everything back together and it worked like a charm. As others have noted, it's not going to punch through 12 gauge sheet metal, but for the 26 gauge I'm working with it leaves a nice starter hole for a drill bit. Overall manufacturing quality is very good given the price point, they just need to improve on assembly processes.

TolkienFan: If you look at the reviews posted so far, this punch seems to be lost somewhere in the middle ground, sort of mired in mediocrity. I feel it is slightly better than that, although certainly not the quality of the more expensive models. The truth is, I would not have purchased this punch if not for the fact that I have misplaced the one I currently own. However, since I needed one and could not locate mine, I decided to opt for a version that was less expensive knowing that I would eventually find the other one.

So, what's the verdict.?? Well, like some other reviews, I found the spring action to be a little on the weak side. But honestly, that's the only real complaint that I have. The body of the punch is well machined and works smoothly. The finish is good and it looks like a quality tool. The hardened punch tip is pretty hard and does it's job without being malformed or dulled. In general, it looks the part and functions smoothly as expected.

The downside is the lack of power present in the spring action. It is enough different from the more expensive versions that the user can readily feel and see the difference in the end result. The punch dimples are light and...
