K Martin: I enjoyed this book a lot except for the way it bounced back & forth from the past to current events. I much prefer stories to be written in order.
However, lots of intrigue to keep you interested.

Ann G: This was one of those books you don’t want to put down until the very end. The story takes many intertwining turns and will leave you feeling hopeful for the future. I enjoyed the historical setting in Australia. I’ve never been there but feel I know it a little better because of this book. The late 1800s - the early 1900s is a fascinating time period when views of a woman’s ’place’ was just beginning to change and the women in this story are very symbolic of those changing attitudes. The characters were well thought out and representative of their time period. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

Julie Aldige: Unable to put this book down I read it in 5 hours. The characters peopling the dual timeline jumped off the page & never ceased to intrigue me. Tea Cooper builds suspense like a master craftsman from the first page till the last. She incorporates fascinating Australian history & culture into her mysteries and leaves the reader mesmerized throughout the story.

Sue Crews: The Girl in the Painting is a good mystery with intriguing characters and a great deal of historical background woven around a believable storyline. My only complaint is the ping pong effect of going from current time to the past every other chapter. Otherwise a good read.

Stephanie McCall: The Girl in the Painting was my first Tea Cooper novel, and an intriguing introduction. In many ways, it's not only off my beaten path, but off the beaten path of historical novels, period. I applaud Tea for writing such a book, and her efforts mostly worked.

First off, Jane, Elizabeth, Michael, and the others are well-drawn, multifaceted, and unusual characters. I particularly liked Jane because she is so unlike other girls of her time, and completely okay with that. Her mathematical talent amazed me (I'm not at all a math person). I also loved how she saw patterns in everything and related to the world through almost uncanny logic and clarity. I could identify with her in some ways; at various points, I wondered if she had Asperger's syndrome. Of course, that wouldn't have been diagnosed in 1913 Australia, or 1913, period. But I appreciated the understated representation.

As noted, Elizabeth and Michael are great as well. Their journey from Ireland, and their personal journeys in Australia, kept my pages turning, especially when Elizabeth started reacting to the exhibition and paintings. That thread got confusing, which I'll get to in a bit. However, I enjoyed the...

Kerry C.: I loved this book. This is the second of hers I have read. I also read “The Woman in the Green Dress” and really enjoyed it as well. I am the fourth generation of my family to live in Maitland and really enjoyed the places and happenings mentioned in the book. Church St., High St., the Tech College, the undertakers, the flood etc.
Will definitely be reading more of her books.
