Klondike Kid: Most DIY'ers building outside wood projects that use pressure-treated lumber will want to use a moisture meter if they plan to paint the wood. This treated wood is never kiln-dried and arrives at the lumber yard "soaking wet" with the chemical treatment. With often 50-70% moisture content. Most outdoor/exterior paints will not adhere properly when painted on PT lumber that has a moisture content above 10% and over a season or two will end up peeling.
This meter is perfect for checking the drying progress on your PT wood. It can take weeks to get down to 10%. The needle point probes are ideal for penetrating down into the treatment slots on the wood for a true reading. Once I started monitoring the moisture content of my PT wood before painting, I've not had any problems with the paint making a good seal.
This meter has a small "computer" inside that you set what type of wood you will be testing since each species of wood has different conductivities the meter measures. Easy to read display. Accuracy appears to be very good when checking completely dry wood. Don't lose the paperwork that tells you the settings to use for the type of wood you are testing.
