TruRex: I had a flat moisture meter that worked well on materials that were flat but needed something to test turned or uneven wood. This does the trick. It is very accurate and easy to use. The only hesitancy is the cap is difficult to get off. I’m sure that as I use it it will eventually become easier to lift off. The instructions listing the associated woods to a setting was rather confusing since it listed some woods in two different categories. The table in the extended Amazon description is much better and one I will print out and functionally use. I would recommend.

Amazon Customer: Bought this meter to measure moisture level on some outdoor furniture that I am refinishing. Moisture level had to be 12% or lower before new finish could be applied. Used this meter immediately after delivery; it seems accurate and displays moisture level quickly. Has eight calibration scales for different types of wood materials and includes a calibration table for various wood species. Measures moisture level on other building materials such as drywall, underlayment and masonry. It also has a gauge that reads the ambient temperature.
Meter has a lot of features at a price point of under thirty dollars. I will be using it for future projects.
Oh yeah, my outdoor furniture will have to dry out some before proceeding with finishing.

Amy: We had our basement flooded recently bec of a slow leaking water faucet bib for the outside. There were signs of water wetness outside the house on the foundation cement but there wasnt any obvious water in the basement so we didnt thought of anything about it. If we had a moisture detector like this one, we would have found out about it much much earlier and would have prevented water damage as we experience to a minimum. Cant give it a perfect 5 yet for a rating since we are still finding out its performance on different materials. But the toll is easy to use and the screen is very clear to read. Time will tell.

Wood workerWood worker: Likes:
Rubber grip edge, keeps hand from slipping when inserting probes in hard objects
Good visibility of screen, easy to read the numbers
Sharp stainless steel pins easily insert into materials. But, don't push too hard.
Cons:
Difficulty in removing the pin protection cap. Have had to use fingernail to open cap. Not easy to open even than.
After several openings/closings was a bit easer to remove.
Had some dry wood in shop that I could not get a reading on meter. Tried to check in several places on the wood. Not sure if my issue or the meter. Any suggestions Tavool?
Suggestions:
Print out Common Calibration Tables (go to Amazon.com and Tavool Moisture Meter Model MT1904) to assist in selecting proper calibration setting for wood choice. Easier to use than the paper chart with instructions.
Do some tests around your home or shop to verify measurements so when you need to check actual moisture content you have some practice to fall back on.

PaulPaul: The media could not be loaded. I got this for use with BBQing and I'm happy to say it seems quite easy to use. It comes with a complete set of printed instructions, including calibration settings for a broad range of wood species from around the world including USA, Europe, Asia and even Australia! Obviously the list of wood doesn't include every variety, e.g. I couldn't find Mesquite or Ironbark (both common for BBQ in respective countries), but I'm sure there's enough there to find something comparable. I love that it takes AAA batteries, as they're easier and cheaper for me to acquire than 9V. It also seems to come with a calibration plate inside the lid, and instructions for use, so that's also a big bonus. Overall, I'm happy with it at first glance. We'll see how it goes in time, if any significant problems develop I'll see if I can update / edit this. Good luck!

Larry in FL: The device seems to work well; measurements seem accurate and they are repeatable.
Only four stars because of two product flaws, which others have mentioned:
1. Getting the cover off the device is very difficult, bordering on silly. It feels like I am going to break it when I open it!
2. It comes with a "calibration board" inside the cover, but there is LITERALLY absolutely no information given or available as to how that is to be used!!! The entire "discussion" of it in the user manual is: "Calibration board: Put measure pins on the calibration board to calibrate before using , the result would be more accurate"
When I put the pins on it, I get a reading of about 18%....is that correct? Who knows!!!!!!
