D. Reisen: We have a son that is an addict. We have attended many alanon meetings and work hard to know that the path our son has chosen is not the path we chose for him and that we need to choose our own path. Letting go of someone you love so very much and have so many hopes and dreams for is very hard. We like that this book showed both sides of this horrible and many times hopeless path.

AMS: I have a mother who is addicted to prescription medication. She has been on it for 15 years due to nerve damage, and recently she was told it's time to get off of it due to other health problems her dependency is causing.
I found it easy to blame her physicians for getting her addicted to these prescriptions for almost 12 years, but I've always known it was a dangerous downward spiral with her life and relationships. Her mood swings, drowsiness, forgetfulness, manipulation, lying and ridiculous behavior has been so out of control, I am truly convinced she is in fact an addict [Even though she'll tell you she's just "dependent"], even though it took me this long to realize it. I feel so foolish for not realizing it sooner. For so long, I have been in denial that she was just "dependent" and found blame in others for her actions and words. I recently started therapy to learn how to deal with her and her actions, but really I needed it for myself, to learn how to forgive, heal, and not let her addiction take over my life.
