Book lover: I have never liked self-help books as most are written by therapists and seem to plunder their clients lives for their own purposes. McKowen uses her own life changing experience to tell her story with raw honesty.

sanddoig: Newly sober person here and absolutely loved this book. If you are sober curious drop the fifteen bucks and get way more value out of it than that.

Potown: As someone who has spent 12 years sober, I found that this book brought back haunting memories of my early sobriety. Laura does a fabulous job of showing all the scary parts of the fits and starts of trying to get there and her ultimate success. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get sober or who knows someone in the throes of addiction.

Daiva Pakalniene: I am sad this book is over.
Although this book is not about how to stop drinking, this is fascinating read about personal journey in sobriety. I could read about myself there and it resonated a lot. Thank you for putting it on paper!

Irlandfan: I use to read the one star reviews first and wasn’t sure if I should buy this book after reading them. I gave it a shot and honestly it was the best read on the topic in a while. I’ll for sure read it again. Thank you so much for typing down all the things the mind goes through with the struggle to give the booze up for good. Thank God, I don’t have friends anymore who drink. Most don’t. I started changing my environment some time ago. It’s time to kick the drink for good now too.

Mark B Thomson: We all know know Glennon Doyle, right? Of Together Rising? Ok. So.
Glennon identified this book - one which I gobbled down in 2 days flat - as one of her must-reads, alongside a little known work called "Just Mercy" and an author you've never heard of named GLORIA STEINEM. Eek.
Glennon says: "This is it. This is the book for people getting sober. This is the one. McKowen’s forthcoming We Are the Luckiest is the truest, most generous, honest, and helpful sobriety memoir I’ve read. It’s going to save lives."
This is a new book by Laura McKowen and it is NOT just about recovery. I don't even know if I'd really call it a sobriety memoir. The thinking and wisdom here can be extrapolated out to whatever your "thing" is. What do you do to numb out and avoid hard things in life, whether you realize it or not? Drink? Work too much? Work out? Eat? Not eat? Overfunction? Caretake? Control stuff? The possibilities are endless.
Until about 5 years ago, the "thing" that ran my life was perfectionism. Pair that with a demanding career (for which I got all kindsa high fives for said perfectionism), the challenges of new motherhood, a comparison habit,...
