30 Weight: Fantastic. Incredibly informative and gripping. This writer has the courage and knowledge to take a stab at writing about the way things really were during that era. Hard hard hard. But that is what produced a so-called “great generation“. Nowadays American people are getting more and more of what they need materially and are squabbling Like a bunch of spoiled infants.
But fear not, a huge dose of real suffering is on the way!
But I digress, this is a wonderful book. Good for reading aloud

S Crabtree: This tale was like a family reunion. Warm & united, yet each person singular, warts and all. Jeanine takes the ribbon of this yarn & leads the reader through much travail with courage often spoken of, but too rarely seen. Her courage & grit cause one to adhere to the ‘I can do this’ too. Each character honed to a beautiful jewel to be cherished. I read Simon the Fiddler & it, too, was a treasure, much like those of Charles Dickens. Please, take time and pause to read this, you’ll be glad you did!

Hughcr: This novel takes you right into American history and vividly brings to life every detail of the era. What I appreciated most was that Jiles is dealing with the lives of ordinary people as they strive to survive and prosper in harsh conditions , always facing the threat of poverty and starvation.

Margaret Smith: I am an East Texas farm girl; my parents were of the depression era and my mother lived her entire life as if another depression was on it's way, so I could identify with much that concerned the depression as well as farm and ranch life. The story was well told with well drawn characters, and I loved the fact that I have been to all the places mentioned in the novel. In fact, I grew up in Lufkin ( Conroe/Lufkin telephone exchange ).

Renetoo: I'm a fan of Paulette Jiles since having read The News of the World , which I loved . I have now read all her books and this is her 2nd best book .
If you enjoy Historical Novels of the so called 'Good Old Days ' that were anything but easy , let alone good, I can firmly recommend Ms Jiles' books. Excellent writer who know what she's writing about and writes in a way that never bores ! Recommend!

Happy Customer: A believable story of one family's survival of the Great Depression in Texas. Ever since the movie "Giant," there is a tendency for stories about women and Texas to follow a kind of pattern. This breaks the pattern. Writer Paulette Jiles is known for her deep research and it shows here. There is little sentiment, and a whole lot of practical reality to the frailties that make or break a family
I do think that Jiles has a way of taking you places you don't expect. For example, the female lead meets a man when she is very, very young and she runs into him periodically over the years. His story, making his way in the oil fields, marrying, having a child, and trying to get a ranch going is a ribbon that runs through her own story. She's got a daddy who loves her and her mom, but he's a rounder and they seldom live well. If not for her mother's resolve to make do no matter what, I'm sure that the girls would have ended up whores or worse. Somehow they manage to live into adulthood and by chance end up going back to the abandoned family farm. Three women trying to pull together what dust storms and the Depression tore apart, their strength is inspiring. I found myself appreciating...
