Andrea Hurst: Excellent read with incredible plotting and kept me glued to the page all the way through. I highly recommend it.

Michelle: I just finished the book and I really can't think of the words to express how beautiful and moving it is. At one point I almost stopped readings it because Duchess and Robin went through so much, but I'm so glad I finished it. The ending was bittersweet, but definitely worth the read.

Alison Carrick: This book gripped me from the beginning, complex, funny, sad, touching and devastating in so many ways. What wonderful characters telling such a tragic story.

Rebecca C: What a seriously great book, full of wonderful characters and a great storyline. One of those books that you want to get to the ending to find out what happens, but also don’t want it to end to have to say goodbye to so many wonderful characters.

Mission Viejo Mom: So I spent the last few chapters crying . . . Loved this story and loved the journey. Highly recommend and also recommend the reader questions at the back which had me thinking and reflecting on this read for days after. In the end, love is all that matters.

Nicole St. John: Beginning started slow, but a few chapters in and I could not stop reading!!! Twists and turns don’t end, fixed to the edge of my seat. And then the end came. And I sobbed the final 6 chapters. I guess the ending was okay, but I was definitely hoping for a different outcome. So beautiful, so unbelievably sad!!

bernhard zils: It reminded me of some of John Irvings best writings. Indeed there is crime in this story, but it serves as a thread the author hands us, so we can follow the carachters through the ordeals life “throws” at them. I watched in wonder how they, in spite or maybe even because of everything that happens to them, they find truth, meaning and eventually, even some peace.

Maureen: First, I begrudgingly forgive my fellow readers for not telling me about this book sooner, mostly because by now I would have read it instead of savoring it recently.

Second — character development. My goodness, this author is talented and her woven story of flaws, saviors, betrayals, loyalty and ultimate sacrifice gripped my heart and still hasn’t let go. This is a story that matters because the characters are all perfectly imperfect. The lesson? Love may conquer all, but with very unexpected outcomes.

As an aspiring writer, I find books like these so intimidating. How can I put together the right words at the right time to prompt a reader to gasp, to shudder and to cry? It’s a gift. I’m immediately looking for more from this author. May she never run out of ideas and oh by the way live forever to keep sharing her talent.

Highly recommend? No. I insist you read it. Run, don’t walk.

Julie Morris: How to begin to review this book? I don’t know how I’m going to do it justice, to be honest. It was my first read of the year, and I’ve been trying, unsuccessfully, to write this review for almost three weeks. There is so much I want to convey about my feelings, and not the words to do it adequately. Still, I can put it off no longer, so here we go.

This book is ostensibly a thriller, spanning a period of decades, and it works extremely well purely on that level. Thirty years ago a murder shook a small town to its foundations and had lasting consequences for everyone closely connected with the case, and down into the next generation. It has robbed Duchess Radley and her brother of a stable family life, and of police chief, Walk, of his best friend and peace of mind. And now the man convicted of the crime is about to be released from prison and return to Cape Haven. This is the catalyst for massive upheaval in the community and a new spate of disturbances that affect all the main players all over again to devastating effect.

The plot of the thriller is complex and surprising, with twists and turns you will not see coming, but it offers more than a straight...

Spicewalker: This book has given me sleepless nights. Not because it is gruesome or scary. Not even because I was compelled to read into the small hours to finish it. If anything I took my time, reading it over several evenings in the end because I wanted to savour it. No. This book gave me sleepless nights because when I finally did finish it my mind was so awash with all the things I wanted to say about it, all the words that weren’t going to be enough, that I spent half of the night switching my lights back on so that I could make notes as soon as something came to mind. I am not a person who makes notes. I am a wing it and see kind of reviewer. This is quite the departure for me …

This book, perhaps ironically, doesn’t begin at the end at all. Not really. It begins thirty years prior to the main story, focusing the reader on the event which is to prove to be the catalyst for all that is to come. It is a relatively unassuming opener, no quick action, no scenes to make the reader jump or unnecessarily anxious, and yet it still packs a punch, the final lines setting the tone for novel. It is a short but effective chapter which tells you all you need to know about the tone of the...
