J B: I never write Amazon reviews, but the SMSL SA-36A Pro surprised me so much I just couldn't resist letting others know. After 15 years of use, the internal amp in my Audioengine A2 left speaker started to make a constant low sometimes crackly woosh sound out of the right speaker. The only low cost options to fix such an old but nice set of speakers was to convert them to passive speakers and the SMSL SA-36A Pro saved the day. The clean sound, bass, and power delivered by this little amp is amazing. If the specs are well in-line with what your speakers need, this is amp a must buy.

MartyMarty: I looked at both the SMSL 50A & 36A and ultimately went with the smaller, lower power 36A because frankly few will need the output these are even remotely capable of in the first place for most applications (stereo bookshelf class speakers that are mostly all quite efficient in a fairly near field arrangement). This SA-36A PRO puts an honest 12 watts into an 8ohm load and it shows, I have several speakers and it powers them all easily to listening level without turning the volume pot to maximum. In fact, I barely need to turn it past 1/8th of a turn from the minimum level and it's at audible level with my monitors (Polk M30 Series II). It drives my Monitor 40's and easily handles some of my tower speakers too (they're more efficient). But really, this amplifier is meant for near field bookshelf or small tower class speakers that are efficient and it can handle quite a bit more, so it has plenty of headroom.

I bought this amp for $40 essentially shipped from Amazon. The build quality is good. It's not top shelf good, but it's not that ultra cheap feeling Chinese stuff you can get for a similar price, even though this is also cheap Chinese stuff, but at least its more...

Amazon Customer: I bought this to see if a small inexpensive class D amplifier could play music through my speakers at sufficient volume and musicality. I am impressed! I am playing FLAC files through my computer using the infamous (and very good) Schitt stack (Modi as DAC and Magni as preamplifier). I play classical music. The amp is tiny however very solid and by no means flimsy. The connections are all secure. it comes with an external power brick which is about the size of a mobile phone and helpfully has a detachable cord between the power brick and the wall socket - mine came with an Australian plug which was very nice. The on-off button on the front works as it should. The volume knob is smooth and has a subtle blue light which comes on when the amp powers up. I don't play at loud volumes however at comfortable listening volumes in a small-medium room the volume knob is at 10 o'clock with plenty of headroom and no distortion. I have tried louder volumes without issue. The Magni acts as a preamp with variable output with the Magni volume knob at 9 o'clock to achieve this sound level. The amp is feeding to Linn Kan bookshelf sized speakers (on stands) which are rated at 4 Ohms. Overall the...

J. Howard: I needed an amp to drive a pair of inwall speakers located in another room from my main system. The packaging and product are nicely done good foam insert for shipping and nice looking solid product build. The power button is ok and the volume dial is nice and smooth. Rear jacks and connections are solid and well laid out but I would recommend using banana plugs as the binding posts are flimsy and way too close together for my taste.

So I hooked the amp up to my system and was pleasantly surprised at the sound coming out of my Linn wall speakers they had been driven previously by a Parasound HCA 1000 that finally died. While the Parasound was more detailed and had much better bass this little amp does a fine job of delivering great sound for casual listening.

The question then became how would it do with a more challenging load so I hooked it up to my home brew Morel/Scan Speak towers for a listen. Now normally the towers are driven by a pair of Audio Research VT 50 amplifiers so this amp is not able to keep up yet switching back and forth revealed little SMSA to just as it did with the Linns give the essence of the music in an easy and pleasant way.

Time will...

Mr P: Arrived fine, UK plug, all seems decent quality.

Sound is very good. Honestly I am quite surprised and impressed.

This replaces a NAD 316BEE amplifier (as I wanted to use that for another set of speakers).

Compared to the NAD amp?....not as good, unsurprisingly. The NAD amp (£250) is more refined, more detail, more 'I'm going to tap my toes to this music'.

Having said that, this amp for under £40 is brilliant. Good amount of volume, runs the Dali Zensor 1 bookshelf speakers more than adequtely, never needed to go above half volume.

It's difficult to quantify what you hear so, bearing in mind comparison to the NAD amp and the SA36A low low price:

+ Good loud sound, does not distort at higher volumes
+ Rythmic
+ Detailed sound, I don't feel like I am missing anything
+ Minimal background hiss, pretty much the same as any other sub £200 analog amp
- Bass is emphasized. Not too much but definitely a little - but this can be a good thing with smaller speakers.
- mid range is a little mixed up (in comparison with an Amp that costs 8 times more) but really not bad at all
- Can be a little harsh/unforgiving at louder...

Jiggy: At first listen I plugged my computer into the SMSL. It had a nice tone, on the bright side on my little Boston speakers, but I think the replacement woofers aren't quite matched to the tweeters. I bumped the upper mids down a couple decibels on the computers EQ and that tuned it close enough for me. Lots of details and just enough bass. Just for kicks I plugged it in to my main system with my frankensteined Infinity's and played some records from the pre amp (great... ground loop hum... oh well, moving on...). I turned the volume to max on the SMSL and started cranking the pre amp toward full volume and... WOW! It lit up the twelve inch woofers with authority. A little funk from "The Time", some old country by "Roy Acuff" and rock with "Iron City Houserockers" and "Def Lepard" all sounded great, even with the bit of hum in the background. A little shrill again with the Def Lepard but I think that's what they were going for in the production. So, OK. It's fussy about what you plug into it, but this is not the first time I've bumped into an amp that didn't agree with a Kenwood pre amp. They have something different about their output. I haven't figured it out yet. The tone seemed...
