JoelBav: Pros and Cons?

PROs:
- Substantial build suggests that if treated like a proper measuring instrument and stored in case between uses, the device will stand up to daily use for a long time
- Diopter adjustment allows even bad eyes like mine to see the scale sharply without glasses. BIG plus there!
- Dead-easy operation, and a convenient dust cover atop of the calibration screw

CONs: (both minor)
- With all the different "brand names" this identical-looking device comes under, the documentation accompanying yours may be different than mine. What I got was fairly well translated, but included the wrong cut-and-paste drawing for the calibration point on the scale. I had to trust the text, not the drawing. I noticed that all the examples I've seen on Amazon (including a video) were exactly right. It's a minor but important point.
- It would seem that if the plastic "sunlight cover" that squishes the fluid against the prism were to break, the device would be useless. A tiny magnet or other way to secure the cover so it doesn't flop around would be the only design flaw that I see

Note that I did not leave a rating for "Accuracy" as I have no way to...

Caveat Emptor: It is essential to get some specialized aquarium calibration fluid for 1.026 and adjust to that level. Otherwise the device can be easily off enough to do harm, especially when adding live stock. Animals can adjust to higher or lower salinity over time in your tank, but if you think you’re at 1.026 and the tank isn’t, new animals will go into shock. Test the bagged water for new animals and acclimate— if you do that you’ll know what the deviation is, but for maintenance, calibrating the refracto is a must.

Frontosa: Originally purchased a hydrometer, the kind you dip into the salt water tank
Did some research and was seeing that people state these are better for accuracy
So here’s the verdict...they seem to be right on about the accuracy
However my dip hydrometer is one or two marks off
Anyways now I have both and can double test the aquarium water with each
I don’t have any corals yet so as long as it’s above the true mark and not over the higher reading then I’m happy and fishes will be fine too
I’ve been with the hobbie for quite some time and don’t stress about it too much uknow
Keep em fishes happy swimming
