I am new to wood burning, so I cannot compare this to other products and am still in the learning phase, but so far this seems like a fairly easy set to play around with at least. The tool heats up fast. This set gives you tons of things to start off with, so there is no need to go out and buy a lot of extras until you have a chance to try this first. It makes a good set for anyone new to it.

I got onto a kick about water fountains/features and just finished a large, outdoor water feature, but on Youtube, I watched several videos on using styrofoam pieces to construct indoor water fountains and to shape the styrofoam they used a wood burning tool. That's how I made two completely different water fountains that looked like staked stones. The foam is easy to burn to make rounded river rock-like styrofoam that I covered in plaster-impregnated gauze and when dry, painted a grey-black. Without this wood burning tool I might still have been able to shave and shape the styrofoam with just a knife, but this wood burning tool works quick and easy.
