Wenvarya: So. I love everything by Rick Riordan, I basically have read all his books.
This book had a slightly smaller charm than his others. I felt like there are a lot of repetitions, also some parts were overwritten. Overally the writing would have needed some "ripening" and an extra round of revision from the author. Some parts it turned into the parody of themselves.
However, the storyline was enjoyable, some events were shocking, and the parts about the Nautilus were very interesting.
Everyone says this is a standalone, but I definitely feel that the door has been left wide open for sequels.
And then why 5 stars? It made me want to read the original, of which I am in the process. While reading, my 4 year old became interested in the "super cool submarine", so I bought a children's version of Verne's book 20.000 leagues... which we are now reading daily. We also built a Lego Nautilus. Moreover, we watched the cartoon version of The Mistery Island. Hence the crying - my son was sad the Nautilus has been destroyed.
However, because of Daughter of the Deep I was able to comfort him by saying that the Nautilus has survived and it was just a lie to keep people from searching....

Theresa N Bellflower: My son likes Rick Riordan books and they normally come out around his birthday. I was looking forward to something that was different from mythology. This book wasn’t as good as Percy Jackson series or the Kane series. I would rank this with the Apollo series. It didn’t have the same sense of humor and tongue in the cheek narrative. I really wanted to like Ana but she didn’t have the same flair as Annabeth.
I also wanted to like it because it was different and it added a new twist to 20000 Leagues and Capt Nemo adventures. Normally, I can devour his book in a day, this one took me awhile, because I just couldn’t get into the story.
It was nice he was trying to have a female lead and try to show leadership etc with her, but compared to Annabeth, she failed.
If you a fan of Riordan, yes get this book for your collection, but just be aware that in my opinion this book doesn’t have the same flair as his Percy Jackson series.

Suzy Bird Gulliver, Ph.D.: I am a consistent fan of Mr. Riordan’s work, having followed all of his children’s literature to date, and I think this is perhaps his best thus far. It is particularly creative, pulling in myth and science and fiction in fresh ways. The interesting psychological and moral twists are engaging and important. I think perhaps that books like this can help young people find their own moral compass.
