Glenna Wigginton: My relative was the boy that fell from the Mayflower and the story was depicted in a really good way that despite the fear felt that day, one could read to their child and not feel like a nightmare might happen. It was a good/cute story.

Kindle Customer: I was especially impressed by the pictures, which look like paintings. The story is as far as I can tell factual and according to all accounts I have read, true. I gave it to my grandson, who is 10 as a gift. He loved it. I was concerned with the description of beheading, but he didn't bat an eye. "That's what they did!" he said when I asked him how he felt about that particular page. Beautifully told. John Howland is a direct ancestor to our family.

Silvano Racioppo: The GOOD: So this is a gorgeous book with sumptuous illustrations and a great narrative. Outstanding book. And, the shipping was fast. I bought it for my dad since John Howland is his x14 great uncle, so we loved it even more, I imagine.
The BAD: The seller mailed it in a regular bubble pouch with NO CARDBOARD to keep the oversize softcover book from bending. The book was creased and dented when it arrived. What does it cost to throw in a piece of cereal box to keep the book from being bashed around? That was shabby. I wasn't sure I could give it as a gift, but did anyway with a explanation and some blame.

Sandra E.: I bought the book for a gift, the person was 76 and had heard the story of this person on TV,and it seemed like a good idea when I couldn't find what I wanted. I don't know how this book came to be advertised in 'British War Ships' but never the less it was and with little time to find what I really wanted I bought it. Amused I gave it with apologies anyhow. Thankfully my gift was well received as it is beautifully illustrated and 'very' easy to read. Please Amazon give approx ages for books like this when intended for younger people.

Amazon Customer: I really enjoyed it. It is a little advanced for younger readers but around pre-teens it would be excellent. I contacted the author as John Howland was m y 10 times great grandfather and he emailed back with a warm response. A delightful read.

Pat S.: I liked the book. The pictures are wonderful and the story compelling. That said the author took the liberty of making John Howland a teenager instead of a young man of perhaps 24, which he actually was. His future wife, Elizabeth Tilley, was only 13 at the time of the crossing. I wish that had been noted in the cover notes, so that the readers could separate fact from fiction. The title could have been The Young Man who Fell off the Mayflower. John did marry Eiizabeth perhaps three years later. She was orphaned when her parents died that first winter and eventually she became a ward of her future husband, John Howland. For an English woman she married very young; however, her circumstances were unusual and there were few women of marriageable age left in the Colony.
