Nathan L.Nathan L.: After moving my kayak every so often from spot to spot because it was in the way I decided fix that. Hoist was a great price. Everything was included for the installation minus a drill to fasten. Instructions Included were very detailed with great images making the installation much easier. Product is built well and is very secure. Rope included was good quality. 1 issue in my application was the amount of rope included is for a standard ceiling height 8-10 feet. My ceiling is much taller causing me to use more length in each of the hook ropes that I did not have the extra section left over for the center tether that keeps the 2 hooks from spreading apart. No biggie I used a ratchet strap temporarily until I got a section of rope. Hoist lifts kayak with ease and the brake engages and holds in position extremely well. All materials are good quality. I have no concerns of it falling when I'm near it. And I gained a bunch of room in my garage!

MysteryShopper: The pulleys went up fast (I got two sets for two boats) and they hold my overweight Hobie mirage drive kayaks without a problem. I have exposed rafters and was able to forgo adding a mounting board, but in my low ceiling situation they still hang low enough that I’ve clocked my head pretty good a couple of times already. I didn’t find routing the ropes to be very challenging, contrary to what others have said, and I like how I can spin the kayaks in the straps to get to the top or bottom. But beware of what your ending height will be once you factor in the straps, the thickness of the boat, all hanging on hooks, suspended from a rope..

WSK2010: With enough hardware and supplies to hang two kayaks, this is one of the best deals out there. Follow the directions exactly as given and you'll be rewarded with a handy way to free up garage space and get your kayaks up off the floor and out of the way. Locking mechanism seems to work great! As long as they're installed properly, each hoist system is rated to hold 125 pounds. Did a great job allowing us to hang our Old Town 120 fishing kayaks (each kayak weighs about 85 pounds.) Just in case, and because I tend to over build, we installed extra support straps for back-up.

Not a bad installation. I recommend having a partner to help. Also, raising and lowering heavier kayaks is a lot easier with two people on the ropes. Really cool and affordable kayak or canoe hoist system.

mid lyf crisis: There’s no way the mfr could anticipate all conditions in which this would be used. That said, the rope provided was about 10 ft too short for one of the lifts and 20 ft for the other. I used these in a covered boat dock with 10 ft ceilings, routing the rope from the pulley to the beam, then laterally to a column and then down to a cleat. I had to buy new rope for each to make the system work. The beam pulleys made the built-in brake unnecessary. Also, the cleats provided are just bent 10 or 12 gauge sheet metal so they’re probably useless. I installed nickel plated cast cleats instead to stand up to the weather. The system is great for getting the kayaks off the dock and out of the way.

Die Montage war knifflig da ich den Lift in eine Scheune mit 3,60 Meter Deckenhöhe montiert habe, die Seile sind dann nämlich zu kurz,.

Mikael: Helt okey fast det var svårt att få maximal lyfthöjd på ett lågt garage.
Fick göra ett fäste till på väggen för att kunna hissa fram/bak individuellt för att få sista cm upp i taket.

greatgreatgreatgreat: The joists you see in the picture were put there to support an electric hoist to lift a jeep wrangler hard top.. it did perfectly for 4 years… until i sold the jeep and the electric hoist with it.. but i kept the joist… later i bought a cargo box but i didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars to buy another electric hoist.. so i went with this pulley rope system.. here whats i think. Installing a rope pulley system like this time consuming. It took me nearly two hours to install this correctly. Where an electric hoist took me less than 15 min… ofcourse this was the first time ..if i install this kind of system again it will probably take me less time but still it does take a lot more time to install than electric hoist. My garage ceiling is 11 feet tall. The rope that came with it is probably good for an 8-9 feet ceiling. Keep in mind that this is a two rope systems.. each pulley has its own rope… in other worss, you are pulling two ropes to lift your thing up…since my ceiling is pretty high up I had no choice than to make a Y junction at the end of the rope because the rope wasn't long enough .. so when i pull , i only pull one rope and it will pull both ropes through...

StephenB: Before buying this RAD kayak hoist I had already owned four RAD bike hoists! Three are used for bikes and the fourth is used as a kayak hoist to store my sea kayak inside the garage for the winter. I was impressed with the quality of the bike hoists and I am equally impressed with the quality of this kayak hoist.

There are some important design differences between the bike and kayak hoists; for example, the kayak hoist uses two ropes to lift the kayak vs. one for a bike which, to my mind, means the kayak hoist can lift more weight. The kayak hoist rope is also thicker. The kayak hoist itself seems stronger (think “heftier”) but this means the bracket which screws into the mounting board hangs down further (5.5" vs. 3" for the bike hoist). The hooks for the kayak strap are more pronounced and thus less likely to slip away from the strap.

When I used a bike hoist for a sea kayak I “wrapped” a common/generic nylon tie-down strap with a simple clench teeth mechanism around the kayak. Dad Reviews itDad Reviews it: I needed a better solution for quick and easy lowering and raising the kayaks (isn't that why your reading this?) . I have 10'6" ceiling in my garage and thought this would be a great tool to add to my overall garage organization but make my kayaks more accessible.

1. Out of the box, the instructions are terrible (which most other reviews share- haven't been changed as of DEC 15, 2016.. Hah. Pretty sure the only reason they included them were for all the legal disclaimers, etc.

That said, we live in a day and age where YouTube will tell you anything you need to know about anything. If you do a search of RAD kayak hoist, the first video is 4 minutes and will walk you through it. So the instructions, well- toss them aside and get going.

2. Check your ceiling joist to find out which direction they run.. Of course my floor joists didn't run the right way and I had to add a 2x4. Not a big deal, but if you don't have the tools on hand, it can add a day or 2 to the install. (you will need your own 2x4, lag bolts, washers, tape measure, drill, and drill bit.) the instructions do tell you what to buy if you need to get them to install the hoist. But I already knew...
