Stephanie: This book was recommended by my BetterUp coach and I can not thank her enough. This might have been the slowest book I read this year because I want to really grasp the concept and knowledge in each chapter. I’m purchasing more copies for my co-workers, mentee and employees. Thank you for your candid book on things I thought I only struggled with and didn’t know how to explain.

Sampada Chaudhari: Playing Big is Tara Mohr’s earnest attempt at helping women play big, especially in their careers.

In her book, she introduces us to the inner critic and normalises having one. She explains how it comes in the way of playing big.

She introduces us to the inner mentor - the older, wiser and more authentic version of ourselves. It’s a voice of wisdom, calm, love and guidance. We can turn to it for answers, again and again. She teaches us how to access the inner mentor and be guided by it, instead of the inner critic.

She introduces the concept of unhooking from both praise and criticism while charting new paths. She explains how ‘good girl conditioning’ and other cultural factors keep women playing small.

Women who play big, she says, receive criticism. She then suggests ideas to unhook from criticism. Her suggestions on managing feedback are fantastic.

Her review of how women’s schooling hampers their leadership abilities is eye opening. She offers a toolkit to combat those shortcomings.

Her chapter on how women hide and keep themselves behind is brilliant and so relatable.

Valerie Andrews: Although written for women, I feel this book is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to bring their personal and professional effectiveness to the next level. It takes a frank and insightful look behind the stories we tell ourselves and the excuses we make for not moving ahead with the work that we feel called to do. And it provides several practical tools to help the reader overcome those blockages. As an author of books about creativity, I certainly recommend this book to all creative professionals. It is a must.

Natalie Antje Ulrich: Practical tips for women who want to "play big". In the author's own words: "It's a practical guide to moving past self-doubt and creating what you most want to create - whether in your career, in your community, or in a passion you pursue outside of work. (...) It's about you living with a senseof greater freedom to express your voice and pursue your aspirations. It's playing big according to what playing big truly means to you."

The book covers useful tools and techniques to use deal with the anxiety that inevitably shows up when we start doing what truly matters to us - either as "direct" feelings of anxiety or in the form of our "inner critic" telling us we are not good enough. I also found the chapter on "Hiding" interesting. The thought of having to get yet more education, another degree, etc. before feeling confident enough to say or do something in the area that matters to you can be an unconcious hiding strategy - one that I have observed in myself.

Overall, the book contains a good mix of examples, explanations and specific tools/techniques. I also like the journaling questions and summaries at the end of each chapter. While this book is primarily geared...

TreeTigger: I have changed since reading this book. Tara’s ideas and actions outlined with such clarity in this book are a pathway to real change. I believe that this book applies not only to women, but also to men.

Anyone caught in a cycle of self-doubt, listening to their inner critics, or unsure how to move forward to a life of fulfillment should read this book for practical steps to take action for the life you want.

Misha: This is not just another self help fluffy book. She really investigates the thought processes that holds women back and why. I am not a knee jerk feminist and do not agree women are at a complete disadvantage (some things yes, but not EVERYTHING), but social conditioning is areal thing that forms tendencies from a very young age that doesn't help us in the long run. And we feel it!

She does a great job of untangling thought patterns and behaviors that work against playing big. Specifically, the good girl at school and fear of criticism analysis was extremely poignant.

One critique is that Tara seems to reinforce these tendencies in her examples of "callings." Her examples of callings almost exclusively included "helper" work: caring for older people, social work, selling jewelry, aesthetics. And many were of women leaving more traditionally powerful professional jobs (lawyer, PA) to do this work. What about the women who just want to be real estate moguls? In other words, there were no examples of profit-driven work which I think is a shame and a larger issue in feminist thought. Women feel a need to justify making money as a goal by itself.

Kindle-Kunde: Tara writes warmling and knowingly about women's challenges in day-to-day business (and private) life. okay, the general insights in (male dominated) business life are nothing new, but her angle is different: almost on every page there is something for empowering me as the reader, some small sentence maybe or just an anecdote that shows me: i'm not alone! there are others just like you! and you - the women going for big - are about to change your little world. haven't taken all of her advice to the practical test yet, but so far the ones i took really did it for me. So thank you very much for this very helpful and encouraging book!

There are so many parts of this book that I have highlighted.
Every seeker has a medium, something OUT in the universe that speaks with the seeker. For me, books have been that medium. Every time, I hit a stonewall, I find books. They speak to me. It feels that the writer wrote the book for me, only for me. So I can learn and move to the next part of the journey.
It feels such an intimate one-on-one conversation that I can't believe the writer had any other reader in mind while writing the book but me.
PLAYING BIG was one such book for me this year.
Especially the chapter on the Calling.
I needed to know. Just know what I already know.

Artist Strong - Carrie Brummer: Playing Big was recommended to me at a fortuitous time: I’d just received my worst online troll comments ever (how many f-bombs can fit in one sentence?!) and while I didn’t know the person and it was clearly not about me, the bite stung. I shared it in a forum of encouraging, like-minded entrepreneurs where I got a wave of feedback, ideas, and support. One of those recommendations was Playing Big by Tara Mohr.

Playing Big was written with a female audience in mind but as you will all learn today, everyone, including us creatives of all genders can learn a lot from what Ms. Mohr has to say. The title gives you a taste of what’s to come, in many ways it is a call to action: are you living life small, or are you playing big? Her subtitle gives us more: Find Your Voice, Your Mission, Your Message.

These three things are SO important for us creatives. Our act of creating is sharing our voice and transmits a message to our community. All of this is a reflection of a larger calling or mission that drives us to create. Yet, we don’t always take the time to really know these three key ingredients for our creative practice.
