Kindle Customer: I was quite happy that it does give you friction to start your fire. I was not happy that upon putting it away the small bearing in the top press came out to never be seen again. Now you have friction on both ends but it does still work so I am giving it four stars.

Michele Sharp: We ordered two of these items for our boys to use on a camping trip, and the string on both of them broke within a few minutes. We were disappointed. I’d recommend spending a little money for a better product.

Update: the seller reached out immediately to ask how they could make it better. They issued a full refund quickly. Maybe we just received a couple bad pieces. Anyhow, I appreciate their customer service and desire to make it right so updating to four stars.

Wayne Roseberry: Hearth board snapped on second or third use, but was easy to repair with some glue.
Mechanism is easy to use, surprisingly fast to get smoke and a decent ember. Still requires learning how to know if the right kind of punk is forming, if the right amount has accumulated to make an ember, and how to carefully move the hearth away and let the ember breathe. The product could be very good with more explanation of technique.
The cap falls off quite a bit if not extra careful, which can get dirt into the bearings and washers. I like the friction free holder a lot, but somebody needs to redesign it to keep from losing the parts or getting them dirty.
The English translation of the instructions are a little awkward, which is more amusing than it is a problem.

This is a good way to teach someone how bow drills work, and how much a well crafted shaft, bow and holder have a HUGE impact on how easy it is to start a fire. Ordinarily the learning curve on bow drills is high because of those factors, leading people to give up. This product eliminates that barrier.

That said, I would not suggest this product as a survival tool. It is a survival learning tool. For any...

Mark H: Reminiscing of my time in the BOY Scouts of America, I decided to purchase this so that I can teach my kids this crucial skill. Upon first use I was able to get an ember and start up a fire. The most impressive part of this is the bearing system. If you use this spindle up and needed a new one, it would take just as much time to taper the bearing block end of the spindle and make a bearing block as it would to just whittle the bearing block end to accept this bearing system. There is absolutely NO heat generation with this bearing system! The only end that makes heat is the end you need to make heat. The only issue I have with this is that the wood is very soft (this is good for beginners because it makes it easy to make an ember), however, for those who are not beginners this wears down pretty quick. Also, the ember generating end of the spindle is tapered too narrow. This can literally make it into a drill with it being so narrow. Now that mine has worn down to just the beginning of the taper it is wearing down much slower. For the beginner I cannot recommend this enough, it is an easy way to learn the basics of bow and drill fire making. For the expert I still recommend this...
