Programmable Digital Timer Switch for 7-Day Scheduling - Intermatic ST01 In-Wall

MGL: Initial setup and programming are not too difficult. Do all of this before installing it in its final location. The (included) battery operates the unit, so doing all the button pushing is easier sitting in a chair. Follow the instructions EXACTLY and take your time. The values will NOT automatically reset after a certain time with no input like some frustrating equipment does, so re-read the instructions as you go without being in a hurry. The instructions supplied are well written and easy to follow.......with one exception! When setting the latitude and longitude of your location, the instructions refers you to the QR code on the sheet, which in turn takes you to a chart for Lat. and Lon. of major cities in the U.S. & Canada. 2 digits are displayed for each value; in my case Lat. 36 & Lon. -87. The setup space for each of these values is 3 spaces long. You must enter, (in this example), 360 in the Lat space and -870 in the Lon. space. If you enter (logically) Lat 036 and -087 you will not be able to set the correct dawn and dusk times. Other than that one oversight, the instructions, when followed carefully will work fine. MS.NC: Usually only motivated to do rare bad reviews, I've thought about doing a good one but always forget, small brain moving on to work or thoughts of other projects - I guess there was something else in my coffee this morning.

I installed this switch in 2020 inside the front door to control 4 ceiling lights on the front porch. Programmed lat/long with the "astronomic" setting and have not touched it since. Thriugh 3 years, evening and morning, from mid-summer to dead of winter, this little thing has turned the lights on and off at the perfect time - the little clicks twice a day have become a reassuring part of our little lives. I mean, it's like we have our own tiny, invisible Stonehenge druid in this little white box at the front door.

Jackie M: This is the perfect item for my needs. However, the programming instructions need to be simplified. I had to read the instructions many times before finally getting the right on & off times close to what I wanted.
Now comes the fun part - changing the Dawn & Dusk times to keep up with the seasons. It seems easier to keep the original settings all year rather than try to adjust.

Blutarski: I had an Intermatic E1020 mechanical timer installed that controlled a whole house fan. My house is 27 years old and has had 3 E1020 timers installed. Every so many years they start making noise like a coffee grinder and keep people awake. The last E1020 I put in was 2-1/2 years ago and it's shot already, so I called Intermatic and asked them to recommend a digital timer and they told me about the ST01. I can not get at the fan that's mounted in the attic, so I don't know what the load is, but the ST01 is rated for up to a 1 hp motor which I'm sure is sufficient. The support guy said that this is the largest in-wall digital timer they carry, so I decided to go with the ST01. The E1020 has 3 wires; Black, Red, White. The ST01 has 4 wires; Black, Red, Blue, Green. I was confused about how to wire the new ST01, so I called Intermatic again. I was told I do not need the white wire. The white wire is what controls the rotation of clock dial and the ST01 does not have this feature. I was doing a single pole, not 3-way installation, so I didn't need the red wire. That would only be used for a 3-way circuit. I also didn't need the green wire because my wall box is non-metallic. I capped...

Dee Gavriel: The best less-than-50-dollars I think I've ever spent. It's been working great for over a year or so. Even if it dies tomorrow (which I doubt) I'll get another one immediately. So nice to leave in the morning, get home in the dark and see where exactly where the front-door key goes.

Amazon Customer: Instructions were difficult to follow for setting schedule. Unlike its predecessor, turn off time is on a different setting from turn on, (eg it is now “schedule 1 -turn on, schedule 2 -turn off). It used to be schedule 1 on and off all one setting. I called the hot line and a very knowledgeable lady talked me through it in 5 minutes. They need to be more explicit in the last part of the instruction sheet. The unit itself is excellent. I appreciate it being able to turn on at sunset and off at 11PM saving electricity with the varying day length. PFS

TylerDurden: Works as advertised. Very functional. Same model as first 2 units I installed 16-ish years ago. "Clocks" always run fast, 10-15 minutes every 6 months on the 2 older timers units. Easy to reset in 1st step of "set-up". Went back for another anyways. This unit is only 2 weeks in. Body is so large, I had to "trim" 3 box fastener tails in the standard 3 gang in-wall box, and other adjustments. Hour and a half install on this one. Did not have these issues on first 2 units. Plus, lacks display back lighting. Could be a 4-5 star item if not for these.

Update: 20 months in, still working. Replace cheap supplied battery upon installation, use Duracel, Energizer, etc. Too bad manufacturer did not provide optional power tap for optional display backlighting. Oh well... Are you listening Intermatic? Power tap?

Update August 2022: Got 4 now. All going strong still. First 2 older timers had "fast clocks". The 2 newer timers one is bout 2 minutes slow per year, other is bout 3 minutes fast per year. Not bad.

T Hall: When I went to a local electrical supplier and said I wanted a timer for a 3 way connection, they all kind of looked at me blankly like they had never heard of such a thing. Well, this switch did it for me, didn't require an additional control switch like another big name product did and cost less to boot. I would have liked to used it with a dimmer but you can't have everything. The battery in it is supposed to last 5 years. I'll get back to you about that in 2023.
