Roger: This is a tool that does multiple jobs, whether you realize that or not! I use it as a depth gauge for determining how long a screw to use in certain applications. The measuring rod is small enough in diameter to fit into a fairly small hole, so this tool can tell me how long a screw I can use... in cases where I don't want the screw to protrude or interfere with anything on the other side of whatever it is I'm working on. Works great.

C. C. Jones: This tire depth gauge basically does what it is supposed to do. It shows the depth of your tread so that you can decide whether it's safe to keep driving or if it's time to replace those tires. I haven't checked this against a manual depth gauge to see how accurate it is. Another review mentions it being off by 1/32 of an inch, which if so, is significant. For now, I'll assume mine is accurate. Ease of use is OK. You put it against the tire and push in the slider to advance the probe into the tread groove to see how deep it is. You read the device. The LCD screen is clear enough. Could use a backlight, but I'm sure that would bring the price up another couple of dollars and this units is likely aiming for the lowest price possible.

My criticism #1 is that it measures the inches in decimal rather than in 32nds of an inch which is the standard measure for tread. We all know that when you get below 4/32 you're supposed to get a new set of tires, but who actually knows how that converts into a decimal format? I have to get out the calculator every single time. It would be a whole lot easier if it would just show me how many 32nds of an inch of tread is there.

DavidF: Haven’t had one of these in a while, but bought one after having service work done of my vehicles and the shop said I needed to buy new tires since the tread wear was down to the minimum. Didn’t look like it to me. I measured them in several places and they all were about 5/32”. I’m pretty sure this is not the “new normal”.

Jeff C.Jeff C.: I can’t really comment on the product’s performance as a tire tread depth gauge, because I used it for a completely different purpose: a gauge to measure the flatness of the bottom of a skillet. And it proved very effective.

Unfortunately, many skillets are far from flat, causing the oil or other fat to run off to the sides. It’s easy enough to lay a straight edge across the bottom of a pan and look at the concavity, but to speak meaningfully of flatness, one must be able to quantify it, and I could not find a ready-made tool for making such a measurement. Most depth gauges—including expensive ones—have fairly short bases; what’s needed is to combine a depth gauge with a straight edge; in this case, the tread depth gauge was combined with a piece of aluminum angle; total cost was under $30.

As can be seen from the first photo, there is a serious problem with that skillet; suffice it to say that a 2.07 mm bulge in the center causes almost all of the oil to run off to the side. The skillet in the second photo has a bulge of 0.46 mm, and it works fine. What’s an acceptable bulge? This tool cannot answer that question, but it is possible to measure what...
