Fred: I really wanted to give this 4.75 stars, but due to rounding, it gets 5. I'll explain the .25 star deduction towards the end of my review.
I spent a good part of Dec 2010 looking/researching for a new receiver for my living room/home theater setup as this is my first real A/V receiver purchase (I've owned a couple HTIB's in the past). Mind you, I'm no audiophile. I don't have really good, or expensive speakers, but I do appreciate, just like any other Joe out there, good sound and easy to use features. After going through reviews and specs/descriptions of Sony, Yamaha and Pioneer receivers, I decided to go Pioneer. Main reason being that Pioneer seemed to have more features in my price zone and those features generally had favorable reviews. I first went with Pioneer's VSX-820 because of the good reviews (and my wife didn't want me to spend much $$), but it lacked upscaling output through HDMI, so I returned it and purchased Pioneer's VSX-920 . This offered the HDMI upscaling, but we (read, wife) didn't like the on-screen UI and we (read, wife) thought the iPod control was broken, so we (read, I) spent the extra $30 and got the receiver I (read, I) wanted...

svfishman: I purchased the VSX-1020-K A/V Receiver for use in a basement home theater set-up. I paid $367 through Amazon (fulfilled by 6th Avenue) with free shipping. The receiver arrived double boxed (with styrofoam peanuts), with no damage to the product box itself.
I've matched the receiver to a Toshiba 55HT1U HDTV (55") and a Sony PS3. The TV gets its signal straight from a broadband/cable feed, without a set-top box. I hooked the receiver to the PS3 via HDMI and connect the receiver and TV via HDMI as well. I use the VSX-1020-K in 5.1 channel mode to drive a pair of 20+ year old Polk SDA 2Bs as front channel speakers (I left the imaging cable connected between the speakers), Polk CS10 center channel, Polk Monitor 30 rear surrounds, and Polk PSW505 subwoofer.
Set-up - Prepare to spend some time studying the users guide before performing set-up. In addition, you'll need to use a standard video patch cord from the receiver video out to the video in on the TV to perform set-up - the HDMI output doesn't seem to transmit the set-up screens to the TV.
I had way more HDMI inputs (6) than I needed. However, who knows what the future will bring in the way of new devices to...
