GeekDrop[.]com: I've looked at mirrors offered at Walmart, Target, etc., and they're basiacally plastic junk. The frame is plastic, the "mirror" is a reflective coating over plastic, and they're aro-und the same price as this one.

THis one is solid as a rock, has a real mirror, and is made of metal.

I was mildly concerned that it might "ruin" the looks of my bike, but "sacrificed" looks for important and useful functionality; happy to report not only does it not ruin the looks, I think it actually improved it's looks.

As for it's stability, it folds in real nice when you want to put the bike on the rack or whatever; it adjusts easily without causing any looseness, when hitting bumps it doesn't budge; it's a perfect little bike mirror. I would buy it again in the blink of an eye.

hello1: To my surprise, the whole unit is made of strong sturdy metal and not the cheap plastic as I was expecting. So that’s a double bonus.

It’s so easy to install and flip it (especially going through narrow paths) in or out when needed. Highly recommended!! Value for money too!!

ELH: Very difficult to mount. If you do not have strong mechanical skills, you will not get these to mount. Had to grease the conical part that spreads and locks the arms on both mirrors. Had to take burrs off with a grinder on the other.

Once in place, they are very nice.

John A McFarlane: I read the reviews and a few complaints mentioned they would not fit properly inside of the handlebars. I have a Specialized Crosstrail and I had to use the smallest of the two inserts and had to get it started first so it wouldn't spin when trying to tighten it. I bought these a couple of months ago and installed one on my bike and the other on my wife's' I ride a mostly dirt and gravel trail 6 days a week and a 15-mile round trip and so far no problems. I also took the bike on two road trips on the back of my truck and never had any loosening from road vibrations. This was a great deal for two sturdy mirrors with great rear vision. They are heavy so if weight is an issue skip these. But as value for the money and their sturdiness, I doubt you can beat these!

Dave: I like the mirrors, I can see who is behind me. The convex surface looks to be optical quality, and is actual glass, not metal. Cleans nicely, no distortion in the view beyond the "Objects are smaller than they appear" type, which is what I wanted. I have a nice wide field of view.

They mount by inserting an expanding wedge into the handlebars. When you tighten the mounting screw, (which expands the inserted wedge), you really have to tighten it. I was worried I might have expanded the handle bar tubing. Upon inspection, that had not happened, they just need to be really tightened down is all...

If the bike falls over, the mirrors are what hits the ground first. I lost one to that, and bought another set, now I have a spare if that happens again... Either mirror can go in either handlebar side. I use them all the time while riding. No matter who's mirror you get, I recommend getting rear view for your bike... It has kept me from getting hit at least one time I am sure of. Right turn driver behind me, and not looking, walk light turns green and vrooooooom, he turns right where I would have been had I not seen him in the rear view... I...

8102: The mirrors are of good quality and I am happy with the clarity of the mirror and the size.

The only complaint I have is that the expansion clamp that goes inside the handle bar does not expand enough to "bite" the inside of the handle bar to hold the Mirror Assembly tight. I ended up having to pull it out after trying to tighten and wrap the expansion clamp in vinyl tape to make it bite into the inside of the handlebar to secure it.

A bit of fiddling around to get it to work.

I would buy it again.

Doug S: It was a bit tight on my handlebars but a bit of sanding took care of it easily.

RolidnotRolidnot: 6/21 update - I wiped on to my left side in my cycle. The mirror got a few scratches but no real damage. I’ve installed these mirrors on 2 other cycles - they work well!

Original review:

These mirrors are very well made - all aluminum and stainless hardware, good quality and zero plastic. Prior to ordering and per the sellers advice, I measured the ID (inside diameter) of the handlebars on my 2009 Gary Fisher Mendota cycle. I used a Mitutoyo inside caliper and carefully measured the inside of the bar - it was within .013 inch so I figured I was good.

I had to tap the outer sleeve into the handlebar with a dead blow mallet - it was a tight fit - that .013 size difference at work - that's 3 human hairs but that's a LOT in the machinery world. This is where you need to pay attention.

Make SURE the tapered side on the cone nut on the mirror sleeve is facing INWARD! When my mirrors arrive, that little cone nut was facing the wrong way and it will be a real pain to get this mirror tight if that nut is facing the wrong way. See my photo with the black arrow pointing at the proper cone nut orientation.

Even with the cone nut facing...
