You need to realize this is not a ready to bake product.
You mix it with flour and water and wait, feed, feed, feed, feed and then can use it go bake.

Cheryl: My starter went moldy. It may have been my own fault for not feeding it proper.

Leilani Nahu: Worked the starter for ages and in the end it had an orange coating on it and had to be tossed. Not sure where we went wrong but was a waste of time and money.

L. Kurtz:
Worked absolutely perfectly. Since I grind my own rye flour, I wanted a sourdough starter that would give me the ability to use rye instead of wheat flour. This system did the trick perfectly. I've been using the starter I built for over a month now (I make bread every week) and I've never had a bit of problem with it. I will say that I was a bit scared at first when I started out. I was worried that I had used too much water at the beginning. The first steps tell you 2 tablespoons of flour to 2 tablespoons of water. The instructions say that it should be like a good pancake batter. The initial mix was really dry, so I added more water and was terrified when nothing happened after the first two feedings. By the time I was at the 1/2 cup stage though, things were merrily bubbling along. My first onion dill rye loaves turned out beautifully. This starter was strong enough that I only needed 1 cup of wheat flour to 2 cups of rye. Yes, I like my breads very dense and filling. Already I've split off the starter for my daughter-in-law, so she can bake with it as well.
Overall, this is a great starter kit and I would recommend it to my friends. It works very well...
