Gwen A. Miller: This was a fun book to read, and Molly is just a delightful and inquisitive character. You can’t help but love her.

Winter: Loved it. Very fast-paced and exciting! Enjoyed Molly and her impetuous approach to life vey much! If you love a strong female protagonist that doesn’t put up with any nonsense, this is the book for you.

Jill Jaxx: Felt like I was in the book it was so well-written. Loved the historical context and the surprising and witty things Molly said! What a heroine!! Loved it so much and can’t wait for what’s next!

Penny Scott: I’m sure what happened to the Irish when the travelled to USA was horrendous and conditions appalling . I’d like to have read a better version of what really happened

Read and Reviewed: The first outing in Rhys Bowen’s historical cosy crime series featuring flame-haired and spunky Irish immigrant, Molly Murphy, makes for an entertaining read with a compelling sense of place full of delightful turn of the twentieth century period detail.

In the week before she turns twenty-three, principled Molly Murphy of the village of Ballykillin, County Mayo accidentally kills the son of a wealthy English landowner whilst defending her honour. Despite committing the crime in self-defence, Molly knows killing a member of the gentry is a hanging offence and flees her small village for passage to England. Cold, tired and hungry after a day spent in a Liverpool replete with signs in factories saying, ‘No Irish Need Apply’, a flagging Molly is given shelter by a fellow Irishwoman. Mother of two, Kathleen O’Connor, is due to sail on the Majestic to New York with her young children the very next day where her husband, Seamus, awaits. A heart-wrenching confession by Kathleen that she is suffering from consumption and will fail the necessary medical sees Molly take her place and sail under another woman’s name and with her children in tow in order to safely deposit...

H. Schneider: I had various reasons to read this.
First of all, I had lots of time on my hands due to Chinese New Year and wanted to read something quick and entertaining between some bigger projects.
Then, I have always been reading and watching lots of Irish stuff, such as recently Boardwalk Empire or Hugo Hamilton's memories.
Then, the book's title is suggesting something that the book doesn't quite deliver: the link to what is generally known as 'Murphy's Law' is not a strong one. In fact, the book's heroine benefits from some lucky coincidences that are quite the opposite of what the 'law' would suggest.
Finally, a friend had recommended it. In this case, I am not fully with him (while other recommendations from him have worked well for me).
The story: a young, self-confident Irish woman in the year 1901 (the 'old queen' has just died, to dancing in the streets of Dublin) tells us how she had to run from home. She manages to get to New York, where a murder on Ellis Island, among her shipmates, causes some problems for her, considering that she is an illegal under false identity. Active person that she is, she takes the initiative and helps the police solving the mystery. In...

Atheen: Rhys Bowen has written a three series of murder mystery novels, each taking place in a different venue and time. The Royal Spyness series,  A Royal Pain , regales the reader with quirky tales of a Scottish aristocrat and distant member of the royal family set in the early twentieth century. The Evans series,  Evans to Betsy: A Constable Evans Mystery (Constable Evans Mysteries (Hardcover)) , tells of a modern day Welsh policeman---much like the M. C. Beaten Hamish Macbeth,  Death of a Valentine (Hamish Macbeth Mysteries) ---and this series is about a young Irish girl who flees Edwardian England for a new life in America.

This, the first of the Molly Murphy mysteries starts out with almost too much historic detail for a mystery; I felt a little like I'd gotten caught up in a Dickens novel. The manner of the heroine's escape from society's injustice was rather clever and very smoothly done, as was her implication in the murder. Her involvement in the proceedings and subsequent efforts to exonerate herself and a friend made for a plausible plot which led to rational actions, but the story seemed to come to a rather abrupt end without any real resolution of the...
