Manodano: I needed the brown/green "cartridge retainer nuts" - the deep ones - since I had to chisel one of my old retainer nuts out and destroyed it the process. The other nut came out like it was supposed to using the Moen wrench, a must-have. The copy cat wrench from Ace and elsewhere is too big to work with the Moen 1224 cartridge. As far as I can tell, if you need the deep retainer nuts, you have to buy the retainer nuts as part of this this kit, you can't order the deep nuts by themselves. If you see that your fixture uses the red and blue extenders once you get the handles off, then you probably need the deep nuts. Pro Tip: order the cartridges, this kit, and the wrench before you start boogering up the existing fixture. Don't try to remove the existing retainer nuts without the dang Moen wrench. You still may end up chiseling the nut out if it's really stuck. And by the way, take great pains to keep that chisel away from the brass threads that the retaining nut screws down in to. Better yet, call a plumber unless you're good at gambling on fixing this type thing. It takes 8 minutes max when everything goes right, and a really really long time when it doesn't. My wife never remembers...

T. J.T. J.: Just like many others my Moen cartridge nut was frozen inside the faucet body and the head stripped when trying to remove the nut because it is made of plastic. I even purchased the correct tool to remove the nut, part #179120.
So I took a small wood chisel and carefully broke up the damaged plastic nut. I also pried and pulled the plastic nut away from the female threads with the small chisel. I was careful not to damage the female threads on the faucet to the best of my ability. After removing the damage nut I used a wire brush for copper fittings to clean out the threads as best as I could.
OPTION #1:
I have a Kingsley Moen Bathroom Faucet and was unable to find any part number for a replacement nut. So I took a chance and purchased this Moen extension. Fortunately the plastic nut fits. There are two plastic nuts in this package and I used the longer one. I then screwed down the extension nut until it firmly held the cartridge in place and my problem was solved.
OPTION #2:
If your threads are too damaged, then try this option. I took the smaller plastic threaded insert and cut it down the middle where I actually removed a small piece out of the...

Dionysus2112: This set work fantastic only because of the two deeper retention rings. Had this set included the stems under the Moen 97344, this would have gotten 5 stars. I should note, this kit is for the Monticello set which is discontinued. I cannot speak for any other faucet this kit may work for.
I bought this in combination with the Moen 97344 stem extension kit. The combined purchase was the ideal situation. The colored hot and cold stems are designed to restrict the flow of water. The handles would will only make a quarter-turn thereby providing less flow and water savings if you're into that, which I am - but I need the water pressure for my shower massager. The stem extensions under the 97344 will allow for a 180 degree turn and higher water flow rate. As for the flow rate, the Moen 97344 set wins!!!!
The valve retention rings in THIS set (Moen 97479) are deeper and do not require the screw into the faucet housing as deep as the original retention rings in the Moen 97344 kit. It would appear these are a reinforced nylon rather than a original nylon rings. If you run into the problem with the heavily corroded threaded brass collar, you'll destroy the smaller nylon ring...
