RyeCat: I have picked up a few BBQ books over the decades and this one looked interesting. I am a fan of Symon's stuff and I am a also a backyard BBQ enthusiast so it was a no-brainer.
Two things I like about this publication: First, the author is a good storyteller. Good cookbooks aren't just about the recipes; they also provide a narrative to give the writer/chef's food a bit of context. Symon succeeds at this, talking about his upbringing in the Cleveland area and how it shaped his tastes (which are then reflected in the recipes that follow). He also does some interspersed sections on at Pit Masters from around the country and how they also helped to shape his own BBQ craft. Second, Symon's style sets a relaxed tone for approaching BBQ at home for the uninitiated. He shows techniques on how to set up your coals for 'low and slow' as well as also showing a few alternative methods (e.g. cooking on the fireplace hearth).
My only criticism of his book are some of the recipes overdo the seasonings and whatnot. He gets a little too heavy handed in some cases on putting too many ingredients which can get muddied and also overshadow the flavors of the main ingredients in his...
