Maxell 290058 Dry VHS Video Head Cleaner

Gaby_64: item arrived with some tape inside the vhs cleaner spread outside its cassette inside the box, this section was crumpled and creased, I am going to attempt to use whats left.

Peter X: I've been transferring my old VHS and S-VHS tapes to my computer's hard drive. After a few transfers I noticed a degradation of sound and picture quality and began searching for a cleaning system for my VCR. Anyone who has run into this problem will know that it is not easy finding a cleaning tape for you VCR since these machines are on their way out! Anyway, I thought I would give this product a try and was very disappointed. The tape got stuck on first play (clean). I managed to get it out ok and try a few more times, but my machine just shut down. Stay away from this product it did nothing in terms of cleaning. I am now waiting for a wet cleaning tape to arrive. I will try my luck with that and see if that makes a difference.

Jeanne A Hickok: The tape operated exactly as described on the package, and I am satisfied that the tape cleaned my vcr.

I was hoping for a miracle in helping with the muddled voice I was receiving on two related channels (where all other channels come through just fine) but it didn't. Of course, the vcr & tv are old technology so I was just hoping it would work.
But I am glad to have the tape and will order again once I have used this one to it's max.

Mr. D: I bought this for my mother (of course, the only person in the entire province who still has a VHS player). She was considering buying a new VHS player but as you can imagine, the price of them nowadays is outrageous due to lack of demand. Going out on a whim, I ordered this item and had it shipped directly to her. She called me the day it arrived to let me know she was watching her videos again. It saved her from having to dish out a ton more money on a new player.

Amazon Customer: It worked! I was sceptical after reading mixed reviews but my combination DVD/VHS player was giving me a "tape cleaning required" message and would no longer play any VHS tapes. It took three cycles of cleaning but the machine is working again.

StarlightSarah: At first, I thought something was wrong with this, because my old one had on-screen instructions and this one doesn't, so I emailed Maxell and got a response that this one doesn't have on-screen instructions. It does work and seemed to do a great job cleaning the VCR (better than the old one actually). Here are the instructions that Maxell emailed back to me:

We have had several generations of the VP-100 and the instructions have changed as well.

For the current VP-100 in the orange packaging the instructions are as follows:

1. Insert the Video Head Cleaner into your VCR.

2. Press the Play button and let it run for 20 seconds. (Screen will show static or blank)

3. Stop and eject the tape now. (Mine stops automatically)

4. Replace Video Head Cleaner in its storage case to prevent contamination of the media cleaning.

NOTE: NEVER TOUCH THE CLEANING TAPE.

5. When the tape reaches the end of the cleaning roller, rewind it back to the beginning.

6. Use this cleaner after 20 hours of VCR use.

Michael Kerner: There is no question that Maxell has made the best of cleaners for your electronics. They have definitely done it for years, with accessories, and continue to do so. While many people have stopped owning VCR's, there are some that still do after all these years, and Maxell is still making those aids for it. This Maxell Dry Tape Head Cleaner handles very well, and works in a instant. It is very easy to read and understand, and should not die down. It will last around 100 times for use in your VCR, and definitely is worth the money. While, it can take a bit out of you if you do overuse it, it should keep you VCR from any flaws for at least 10 years. I have always loved what Maxell had made with their electronics accessories, and this should definitely be a great buy.

Carol: I bought the stick for my 86-year-old mother, and she loves it. She even traded in the trusty mop handle she had been using (and I hated). The stick has a rubber tip on the bottom which greatly reduces the risk of slipping. The handle is a nice, molded grip. The top segment can be raised and locked into place. This joint stays locked, creating a taller stick. However, the one flaw I found was the lock on the bottom segment. It will not stay locked. Any pressure and the segment slides (telescopes) back into the larger segment. Very risky for an old woman, so we don't use this lock. That aside, the stick is well made and my mother likes and uses it.

Mudd: I love how amazon pesters you for a review after a purchase. In this case, I can't really say for sure how this product is. I've used it once on a total of the 3 VCRs I own. I'm used to wet tapes vs. this dry, but my wet tape disappeared. My Panasonic VCR rarely, if ever, gives me grief - so I didn't notice any difference after cleaning. The cheapo VCR doesn't get used often anymore, so who knows?!?! The JVC VCR wasn't happy after being cleaned with this tape. It wasn't happy when I tried playing a tape of stuff I recorded off the TV using that VCR. It behaved better after letting it run awhile - and no, it wasn't that there was a problem with the tape. Also of note is that I don't play borrowed or rental VHS tapes in any of my VCRs, so they don't get funked up by those. I only play VHS tapes I own, or tapes I recorded on.
