Barbara J: I always thought this author was more of a romance author so I didn't even look at her books, but then I saw this one listed as Suspence so thought I would give it a try. Beautiful writing and you won't know who did it until the very end. And there is a little bit of romance, but tasteful. I really enjoyed it, even though it kept me up a couple nights cause I didn't want to put it down.

Zbed: Rice's characters are complex, but understandable. She conveys their intense emotions, intelligence, failings, and insecurities, as if she knows them intimately and is writing the stories they tell her.
I had a hard time putting the book down for the murder mystery it was. I found each character's perpective of the story, told separately only added to the intrigue of the mystery.
You can tell Rice does her psychological and forensic reseach. I appreciated the details she provides, making the narrative believable.
I have read other Rice novels - quite different from this one - but all captivating in their own way.

Audrey Premetz: I thought the story was drug out and couldn't keep characters straight. I don't like the prof anity. It did keep me in suspense.
I believe she wrote Safe Harbor, which I enjoyed very much!

Bookworm: I liked the tension throughout the book as the clues were uncovered as to who killed Beth. I did think the wending was a bit weak, like there were only 10 pages left and it went straight to the solution, and THE END
Apart from that, I really enjoyed the book.

Linda Pfeiffer: Perhaps because I found the book was more manipulative in the beginning than I believed it should be, I was unhappy with the way the ending was devised. But Luanne Rice did deliver a thriller with a good ending. Although I still don't understand the "why", as in who, what, where and why. But I'm sure I will be among the few who didn't love it. And I still intend to keep her on my booklist as I did love, "The Shadow Box" a recent read, written by her.

lyntrom: Kate is concerned when she has not been able to contract her sibling Beth who is pregnant. When Kate arrives at Beth's home with the police, they find her body. Kate is determined to find her killer. There are strong similarities to their mother's murder which happened when Beth and Kate were children. Several suspects emerge as the investigation continues including Beth's unfaithful husband and the police struggle to find enough evidence to confirm the killer. There are a lot of secrets Beth's friends have been hiding and Kate is shocked by many of the things she learns about her sister. However 6 months later when friends and family gather to celebrate what would have been Beth's birthday, the truth finally emerges. The story is fast paced at the beginning, circular in the middle and the ending left me baffled.

Charles Hill: Last Day by Luanne Rice is marketed as a mystery thriller. It is that but at its core, it is women’s fiction. The central characters are all women, with the men in their lives mostly peripheral.
The story is primarily concerned with Beth and Kate Lathrop, and Beth’s daughter, Samantha. Rounding out the characters are Lulu and Scotty, Beth and Kate’s lifelong friends.
The story starts out with the pregnant Beth lying in bed with descriptions of her bedroom and the house and garden. Her sister Kate, who’s a private pilot, is worried because her sister hasn’t been answering her phone calls and texts. She calls the police who help her break in, only to discover that Beth has been murdered and the valuable painting, Moonlight, has been stolen. The description of Beth lying in her bed without disclosing her death sets a tone that’s repeated through flashbacks of times with her sister, Kate, and the other members of their all-female clan.
This is a disturbing replay of a crime that occurred while Kate and Beth were teenagers, resulting in their mother’s death. The girls and their mother were tied up in the basement of the family’s art gallery and the...

Lynda Kelly: This was one of my Kindle First reads for January, since we were offered two for this month. I really enjoyed it. It has a bit of everything, murder, mystery, romance and plenty of secrets and lies to whet your appetite. I only didn't give it 5* as there wasn't anything extremely "different" about it.I liked Kate and Lulu the most of the quartet of women featured here. The husbands or boyfriends were more bit-players, though what I saw of Pete was more than enough !!! I found myself quite snivelly a couple of times as well.....
I did like this expression, "You have to have your head in the clouds to shoot for the stars." I looked up the artwork mentioned and must say I loved the Rembrandt van Rijn one. I couldn't find Fifth Avenue in December but did see Fifth Avenue in Winter so wondered if that was what she meant. I did need to re-recall who all the characters were upon opening this up each time as there are quite a few to remember.
It's pretty far-fetched that a policeman wouldn't know what Mensa was though there were hardly any mistakes-she wrote confidants and not confidantes and needed a hyphen in summer silent and visitors needs an apostrophe and that was it so pretty...

MarjorieCanon: The family and best friend dynamics held the story together well. Poignant and surprising. The love connection with Conor Reid could have been explored more, but then it may have been an entirely different story.
