This device is automatically detected by the iPad and ready to use out of the box. The case is ok, I would prefer a belt clip as opposed to the sewn in loop, but the device is small enough to fit in your pocket so don’t let that keep you from purchasing!

Jim: This is a great device and so easy to use. With their iPhone app, I can use the Sketch Plan feature to roughly draw a room with my finger, take measurements which pop onto the app, and add those measurements to each line I drew. The app automatically resizes the roughly drawn lines to the exact measurements I dragged onto the sketch. You can then add windows, doors, etc. and save or share the dimensioned drawing. It will tell you square feet of the room for flooring, or volume of the room if you add wall height. This is a free feature (there are 2 other free features and 2 more you can choose to subscribe to). Of course, you can just take individual measurements without the app really easily too. I previously loved the Leica brand and this device confirmed my opinion.

Mr.J: Needed to do a 'site survey' for a quote. Picked this up last night and now I really like it.

UPDATE: 2021-05-21
After using this on a job site, I'm a very happy customer. With this nifty gadget I was able to take a massive amount of measurements on the site, all by myself, and in really good time. It did what I needed without a single hiccup.
In hindsight, I definitely would have sprung for the ~$500 model. Making all my own drawings took too long.

PROS:
YES - easy to use, but read the manual first - it's a Laser Measurement Tool, (What part about 'laser' makes you think 'wing it'?)
Well built, compact, and the materials used seem to be good durable plastics.
Well designed: The flip out tool, the locking battery door design, and even the way the lanyard attaches make me think that whoever designed this took their time to try and make every piece fit and work as well as they could.
Good instruction manual (online), useful training videos.
The flip-out offset tool automatically adjusts the measurement, and a nice touch.
The measurement functions are numerous, and covered all of my needs for a basic 'as-built' site survey.

S. Giske: Beautiful and bright. I purchased the target card and the glasses since common sense dictates I will someday have a scenario for them. For those of you saying you can sketch it by hand quicker... you likely have a flip phone and hate technology? Out of the box I stumbled the first night while investing 5 minutes of nonsense playing. BUT the next night I installed the app quickly and used the intuitive features to draw my first room in seconds. I did not read the manual. I will likely need help when it comes to 3D volumes or height calcs. If you fail to find it, use the "On-Dist" button in the bottom center of your sketch! Amazing: pivot the laser towards a wall, touch that button ON YOUR PHONE, drag the distance to the line you drew, swivel the laser, touch the button on your phone, drag and drop the measurement. It could not be easier! Granted I'm a visual person who likes technology BUT I ain't no 13 year old - I am old! If you don't remember what year it was when you had a flip phone, you will love this! If you could care less who Google and Apple are, stick to your tape measure. I am certain most naysayers are full of operator error. BTW, easily register online using the app....

G.Y.G.Y.: For the functionality offered by this LDM, it's WAYYYYYY~ OVERPRICED, as with all Leica products. Instead of writing about what Disto D2 can do, let me tell you what it CAN NOT do, compare to a no-name brand LDM in the similar distance range that has more functions and cost less:

- No bubble level (neither physical nor digital);
- No inclinometer;
- No pointfinder camera (that help you aim when used outdoor);
- No tripod mount;
- No battery charging port;
- Not designed for rechargeable batteries (i.e. NiMH, which is typically only 1.2V in AAA size. Still usable in D2 but the battery gauge will show just 1 bar even when on a full charge.)

And why didn't Leica design the D2 to use the AA size which packs more juice and last longer? Don't give me the crap about size increase. How much bigger does it need to just make the housing larger for 2x AA's? Besides, the D2 came with its own carrying pouch anyway, just like any other LDMs on the market. So who cares if the device is just a bit larger?? Only logical reason behind this I can think of is--Money (so Leica can "feature" it in their higher end product line). Greed, people, Greed!
