Aunt Jane: I ordered this book to prepare for my trip to Egypt. It is well-written, engaging and fascinating! It helped me to understand better what the hieroglyphics mean and why they were written they way they were. Am I proficient at reading hieroglyphics? No. Did I understand better than anyone in my tour group what I was seeing? Yes!

Kazz: As a complete beginner, I found this book easy to use and an interesting read. It provides context for the language based on actual archaeological artefacts (with diagrams), which is immensely useful if you want to understand how the language was used in ceremonial contexts.
If you’re looking for a detailed a analysis of the linguistic mechanics of Middle Egyptian, this may not be for you.
However, if you’re heading to Egypt in a few weeks and would like to recognise some words and phrases on the ancient inscriptions, buy this book.

Moss: The picture of the hieroglyphics are too small especially when there are 3 birds representing 3 different sounds.

Roddy: This book has some great examples of stelae. It shows them with the figures and hieroglyphs on them, and then it transliterates and translates them. It walks the student through each quite well. It also has some nice explanations for what it talks about. I would have liked, that being said, if there'd been some proper lessons in the book. It would cover 1-sound words and then give you lines to copy them down, but some sample text would be night, and having write out the meanings would have been even better. Having to start a dictionary as we went would have been better yet. The lessons are all similar. They're not bad, but it's like they're just dropped in to make the text look more "educational". It's a nice text, but it could have gone further.

Vanessa: The approach of this book is really good for beginners.
-They will give you the sounds of several symbols (there are way too many)
-They will give you the formulas - (something about the structure of how they wrote sacred texts, what comes first, what to expect next when you see a common structure)
-They will give you the history of the dynasties, names of kings/pharaohs
-There's a list of sounds and symbols
-You will read straight from real plates and constructions and that's very exciting!
I had started studying hieroglyphs before, I even have the book of the dead, but I wasn't aware of certain details that make the reading very difficult, such as the fact they can repeat sounds for the sake of keeping balance in the visual beauty of the writing. They also give the formulas, this is very interesting and makes the reading easier when you understand what is probably the following words you'd look for.
By the end of this reading you'll be very happy to see things make more sense when looking at hieroglyphs, but that's not all. You'll be able to read many names, many formulas, but more study is needed, of course, if you want to understand more of this fantastic...

U. N. Owen: The book tries a new approach to learning hieroglyphs, which, for me, was not as good as Manley's other book "How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs". Both books try to make a complicated task simple which is perhaps not really possible. All one can hope for is that one systems of presentation fits the reader's style of learning better than some other. Manley is certainly knowledgeable and so there is little problem with the material itself or his command of it, I think it is really a problem for the reader to find the book which works best for them.

D. Charles Pyle: When I saw this book, I thought it would be a good introductory text for one of my daughters who at the time had expressed an interest in learning to read Egyptian Hieroglyphs. I purchased it to see how useful a text it would be for her (I had no need to make use of it for myself, however). While she never went on to pursue the language (though she has informed me in no uncertain terms that she wants all my Egyptian books when I die!), I enjoyed reading through the text. I wish this book had been written 30 years ago. It is an excellent step-by-step guide to learning enough to read monuments for one's self. One definitely should proceed further, however, after completing this guide to the basics sans technical jargon. There is a good amount of memorization still involved, but it is far easier than most all other texts I ever have read, and it is mostly up-to-date. I loved this most about the book.
There, however, is a rather serious error (in the edition of the text I read) that shows up on pages 70-74. Errors in drawing and in transcription caused the formulation of an entire argument that was unnecessary. If one takes a closer look at the photo of the original on page 68,...
