PDQ: Lyme disease was first detected in Lyme, Connecticut. The town is across Long Island Sound from Plum Island, where it was being used in experiments by a scientist who specialized in tick-borne diseases. The island is 4 miles off the East coast, but the book documents the decline in safety measures in lab 257. The evidence is circumstantial, but entirely possible.

followtheblind: Almost no information about ticks and Lyme disease, which is the one thing people associate with Plum Island. Otherwise, solid and engrossing historical account, but I wanted tick/Lyme info and there was almost literally none. Skip the last chapter, which is just anti-communist nonsense.

Psych Buff: Stuffed full of names and dates. Incidents are mind-boggling. So frustrated these events get buried by governments and we can't get them to stop.

Bama Fan: I came to this book after reading the book Bitten: The Secret History of Lyme Disease that kept referencing Lab 257. Since I enjoyed that book so much, I thought I would enjoy this one as well. Though this book was written years ago, it is important to note the problems that can result when a lab is doing experimental work that can leave an unsecured area. This is one of many tales of good intentions (e.g. doing scientific work to learn more and to help defend against worst case scenarios) and the unintended consequences of choosing a site that is less than ideal and protocols that were not consistently adhered to. Even though it is dated, it is good to go back and read the history of this area and the type of research done. I would recommmend this to anyone who is able to stomach things that are disturbing to know but important to have an awareness of.

Amazon Customer: A "must read" for anyone interested in government ethics and bioterrorism. This book contains much more then the history of Plum Island and the possible Lyme Disease/ West Nile virus link.
This book also contains information about tests performed on U.S. soldiers and on U.S. soil, as well as many of the documented accidents that have occurred.
However, most egregious (to me) is the mismanagement and lack of oversight that seem to go hand in hand with many "secret" government programs in today's world.
Simply put, if the contents of this book represent what is available to the general public after decades of investigation, what other mishaps have happened that are not available?
I repeat, this book is much more then a history of Plum Island; it is a report on the effects of large lobyist's and the moral bankruptcy of many of our nation's governing bodies.

Diana M: Lab 257 written by Michael Christopher Carroll is about Plum Island, which is near Long Island, New York and Connecticut. The book takes a look into the secret world of Plum Island and the connections between deadly diseases that have migrated into the population. Plum Island is off limits to the public and it’s also unidentified on most maps. Where it is identified on a map it is stamped as U.S Government- Restricted Dangerous Animal Diseases. The book takes a look at the connection between the outbreak of Lyme disease and the West Nile virus. The purpose of this book is to let the public know about the secret world of Plum Island and the outbreaks that are connected with the Island. The book also takes a look at what’s in store for Plum Island and to prevent a biological catastrophe.
At the height of Plum Island, which was considered “The World’s Safest Lab,” not much was known to the public, what viruses/bacteria it held, and experiments it contained. The Army at one point, and then the USDA, ran Plum Island; it also had multiple directors in charge. All the secrets of Plum Island started coming out into the public eye, from former to current employees. They...

J Knight: Factual information outlining the history and the scientists involved in developing germ warfare experiments on animals in America & the resulting health risks now affecting millions when these germs 'escaped' into the atmosphere. The book questions whether the release of infected tics resulted in the huge increase in various illnesses including Lyme Disease. This Lab 257 is the equivalent of the UK's Military experimental unit at Porton Down where the Ebola virus is currently being created along with other biological germ warfare tests.

Maha Upasika Gotami: A lab playing with super-dangerous disease viruses on an island just off New York harbour. An American Portland Down that runs down. The inefficiency, wastefulness, neglect, and stupidity, the shortsightedness, lack of funds, and gradual decay of the necessary controls and safeguards to keep the public safe from out of control diseases that have no cure.
Much worse than a horror story because you know it is real and ongoing.
Could be better written; more photographs would have been welcome.
It is the sort of book one is surprised that someone was allowed to publish. I feel that if it had been about a multinational company it would have been stopped; but this is about a US Government lab.

Gretchen: This is my second copy of this book. I gave the first copy away to a friend, who was interested in the subject.
This is not a riveting read, like a novel with a plot. It's the painstakingly researched story of a germ warfare research lab off the Coast of New Jersey. Many of the diseases, which plague us today are caused by bugs escaped from this lab. Due to the very nature and gravity of his revelations, Christopher Carroll had to back up everything he says with references and sources. The mere fact, that this book is still in print is proof, that Carrol speaks the truth. It is not a light read, and maybe a bit over-researched in parts. But for anyone, who wants to know the truth about germ warfare and its overall implications to all of mankind and nature, this is a must read.
