But mine has seen regular use on 120 and 240V wiring, and earned its place in my electrical hip pouch. The non-contact tester has been sensitive and reliable, and that is the key function. Higher voltages light more LEDs, and there is a blue LED to indicate power/sensing on. Like all NCVT devices, make sure to check it on a known live wire before each use -- and check the instructions. The built in flashlight is good enough for close up work (see the pic) but I carry brighter flashlight too. Battery life has been very good -- still on the original set after about a year. It has survived a couple of drops onto concrete, and getting seriously wet once. If mine dies, I will order a new one ASAP. Thanks for reading the review, and I hope it was helpful.

Stefan Z: Works exactly as advertised. Its accurate and the size is excellent. The Led is just bright enough but has a bit of a halo around the main light beam. Its easy to use and read. i wish the beep could be turned on and off. Great product and I highly recommend it.

Being a homeowner DIY’er I thought I knew enough about tools to own most of the essential basic ones. I literally just found out about the existence of this type of device by reading an especially well-written setup guide for a wall switch. For years I’ve used one of those little plug-in polarity/GFI testers when I wire an electrical outlet to make sure it’s right. The same tester also gives me assurance that I didn’t forget to turn the circuit breaker off. But for wall switches and other wiring (especially in an older house that has wiring shortcuts) I’m never 100% sure that there isn’t a hot wire in that box or which one of those two identical black wires is the lead. Finding this tool isn’t just nice, it’s mandatory.
As I shopped for the right tester the biggest selling model was a fraction of the price of this one from Klein Tools and I’m sure it would have worked just fine. But working with electricity isn’t the time nor the place to go low budget. I was attracted to this one primarily by the five LED’s that not only show you the presence of voltage but gives you an idea of proximity and strength, that plus it has a warning...

Rivian: I'm not a professional and only use this around the house. Had to change out some dimmer switch for my LED bulbs. Even though I turned the breaker off, I still wanted to make sure there's no current flowing through. It works great. Super easy to use. The LED light is a big plus. The audible tone is a great feature. You don't have to bend to see if the indicators are on. I did note though that it's very sensitive. I have one of those USB chargers and this thing gave off signal 6-8 inches away. In fact, most of my plug in chargers and portable devices gave off warning 6-12 inches away. I find this interesting. But since this is a safety device, I'd rather it be too sensitive than not sensitive enough. Overall, I think its a great tool to have around the house. At $20 bucks, it's a good investment in your safety.

My
Greenlee
with the sensitivity adjustment wheel was beginning to act up after a few years of use, and I really didn't like that the on/off and sensitivity were on the same easy-turning wheel.
This NCVT isn't perfect, but it's very good. My main complaint is I'll often get a low voltage reading (two of five LEDs illuminated on the bar graph display) when I'm touching directly to a hot, but there's no question it's hot, and most of the time the bar graph works correctly. I've yet to get a false positive (other than a quick beep at initial contact that immediately ceases).
The touch on / off is perfect. Particularly the double beep the unit emits when it's being powered off, so there's no mistake that it's no longer functioning. The flashlight is a nice touch, and really doesn't add much to the overall girth.
While I understand the reasoning behind not having an insertion tip, I don't see the harm in including one, but it hasn't really affected the way I use it. Old habits die hard, though.

Retired Bear: After seeing an electrician using this while we redid our bathroom I knew I had to get one of these. I was disappointed however, when I learned it was supplied by Home Depot and I could have drove there or ordered it delivered and saved $10. Live and learn. Never assume.
