Ed (left the snow belt): I couldn't find any KN-COSM-IB but Kidde told me this unit could replace it; and it did, just had to plug it in.
However even this unit is being phased out in favor of their newer hardwire design with built-in 10-year lithium battery. Those new units have 3 wires and a plug and a big hump on the back. I bought one but it wouldn't quite fit into my existing electrical box. I had no interest in rewiring while on top of a ladder.
The detectors I got were made in October 2020 but instructions say life is 10 years from first power on. I'm satisfied with anywhere from 7-10 years life out of them.

A. Leonard: If yoiu have to change out the AC plug that will take a working knowledge of house electricity. I.E. turninig off the power, a steady ladder, have good sense of balance, know how to tie the black, red and white wires. Watch how to videos on utube if your not sure and are a first timer.

Lilly Hi Way: No problems with device but packaging was deficient. Device was in a thin cardboard box, the kind you'd see it in on a store shelf. That box was then covered with a layer of plastic wrap and then mailed in a plastic bag that had plastic bubbles on the inside. I wasn't impressed with the protectiveness of the packaging. When I took it out the card board box inside had a pushed in corner. The hard wired device itself seems to be working as desired so I suppose no harm was done. In another order I ordered Kidde battery operated detectors and they were wrapped quite well and protected the device much more thoroughly.
