Kindle Customer: These firestarter rods work just fine. Put out a nice load of sparks when you use enough force. I can't imagine something that would put out much more. The whistle and compass are a nice addition. I made a holder on one of my survival knifes to carry this on the knife sheath. It is just the right size. I would recommend these for anyone needing a good magnesium firestarter.

Heather Foley: They sent me 2 in the package! It was labeled as 2 in the set, but what a cool product and what a cool deal. Totally thrilled and will surely buy from merchant again! Great deal, great product!

Colorado Avid Reader: This was a gift for a friend to add to her survival kit. Her eyes lit up when she saw it and it was a welcome gift for sure.

D. Edwards:
So, I honestly didn't expect this product to work as well as it does, but this really performs well! I have a small collection of magnesium firestarters I've tried through the years... mischmetal rods, block magnesium, and other magnesium rod designs similar to this one. This is surprisingly one of the best at throwing sparks just like you'd want. The extra little things (the whistle and compass) are functional (it works like a whistle should and the compass points repeatably) and a nice little touch, but the real value of this purchase is found in the firestarter, itself. It just performs very well.
If you can't get this one to shower sparks or get decent sparks from most starters, make sure you look up a video on how to properly use one of these (e.g. pull the magnesium rod toward you against the back of the saw blade, holding the saw blade stationary). While it's a subtle difference, it makes a difference when trying to start a fire and cast a usable amount of sparks.
All in all, I recommend this one. It's a solid performer.

Kurt Gilman: Great value. At this price get a few and scatter them through your active working bags/kits.
NOTE: It is best to "rough up" the ferro rod BEFORE you need to use it in the wild. If you need it in a survival situation, the last thing you want to be bothered with is low spark when you need fire ASAP. I take mine out back and run a steel on them until they provide expected spark. This is common to all firestarters so I am not docking points for it.
