I'd say magnets are just about the right strength. They aren't super strong but not weak either. The wide base also helps keeping a firm grip on the attached surface.
I put 2 of these on the side of my fridge saving counter space.

VVBulldog: I have another very similar one that is all metal and does feel better made. However, it was twice the price of this one. So with that I'm very happy with this one. It is holding with the magnets well and to the eye looks just like the more expensive one I have. I would buy it again.

KatWy7172: I love that this lets me get the paper towel roll up off the counter. My one wish is that the two pieces could somehow lock together, so that when you pull on the towel roll, one side doesn't move and have the roll falling off. Minor design flaw in my opinion, but sometimes it's annoying to have to hold the roll when ripping a towel off, especially if your hands are messy.

Katherine: Easy assembly - put the paper towel roll onto one side of the holder and slide the second magnet into the other. Sturdy hold. We keep ours on our fridge...love that it saves counter space!

Lo único, es que yo lo tengo en refri y si jalo muy fuerte, cuando las prisas, se mueven tantito los imanes, se desacomoda pero no se despega, pero es cuestión de agarrarle el modo, es muy práctico.

Abcha0s (Brad): Not much to say. This worked perfectly for my application. The fact that it's two pieces as opposed to one really doesn't seem like a drawback. Perhaps an advantage? It's easy to load rolls and it stays in place.
