Goddess of Chaos: "This massive canyon was formed by the constant erosion of the Colorado River for the last six million years."

This is more than just Where is the Grand Canyon, this gives an introduction to our national park system, gives an idea of the size of the Canyon compared to other parks as well as its popularity, and I loved how it explored the plants, animals, and people that have called the region home over the centuries, complete with looking back to before it was part of the United States, and how it came to be part of the US.

Highly recommend for anyone taking a curious kid to the Grand Canyon, they'll learn about the layers of stone, and colors, how small things appear from the rim -- but how large they truly are down at the river, and so much more.

JaclynJaclyn: We had a very long (3-day) drive to the Grand Canyon. We took turns reading this book out loud with our kids so they could learn some history about the Grand Canyon before we arrived there. We read a lot of the "What was" series and this one (like many of the others in the series) was great for the whole family.

SoCalMomto4: Such a great book. We were taking a trip to the Grand Canyon and bought this to enhance the learning experience for my 7 year old son. We ended up reading the whole thing together not he way there and referred back to it several times over the trip. I found it just as interesting as my son did.

PJ Fred: The series of Who Is... What Is.. and Where Is... books are immensely popular in my third grade classroom! Since they are chapter books with large print and interesting graphics, the kids snap them up as soon as I buy them. I bought Where Is the Grand Canyon? for my 13 year old son for his birthday. As he was busy reading other books, I brought this to school and it is now in the hands of the fourth child who clamored to read it. I must retrieve it for the summer!
The reading level of most of these books varies from 4th to 6th grade, but good readers will not have a problem with them. The Grand Canyon book has nine chapters, including an introduction and there is a time line at the end for both the subject of the book and one for other events in the world. The chapters focus on the history of the place, people who were instrumental in shaping its history, and the science involved such as wildlife and geology. A favorite chapter in this book is "A One Armed Adventurer" which tells of explorer John Wesley Powell who lost his arm in the Civil War, but still managed to climb cliffs in the Grand Canyon. He almost fell to his death, but was saved by his friend and a pair of long...
