We use it as a whole house fan installed in the gable end of a loft/attic. It really moves some air through the house. Outside if is a bit loud so I wouldn't point it at a neighbor's house. Inside, it's not bad unless you're sleeping in the room right below it. Only been in for a week, but very satisfied so far.

linda blackburn: Keep in mind, this is an exhaust fan ONLY...
Originally, I wanted to put a fan at each end of a 2nd floor barn being refurbished to hold Barn dances in (one blowing in, the other out) but I was concerned about the noise being generated at both ends of the barn for this size fan. Instead, I installed TWO of these fans at the same end to push out as much hot air as possible. When I fired them both up and set them on high, I was amazed at how quiet they are! Yes, they make some noise, and yes you can hear them, but the hum on high is nothing like the roar I expected for this size fan. I am thoroughly pleased with their performance and their combined noise will not interfere with guests hearing the music.
PS; I did NOT install the temperature control as I do not need it, but it's a great feature if I need it someday.

A. Cerqua: I bought this fan to go into the gable end vent of my home attic. It is replacing one that had been there 30 years. I built much of the house myself so although I don't do it professionally, I know my way around construction. The fan easily fit into where the old one came out with minor modifications (to the frame not the fan). For the price I am very pleased with the construction of the fan. It is well made. Fit and finish are of good quality. I couldn't find any shoddiness anywhere. I see where some complained about the flimsiness of the louvers. By design louvers have to be light weight. I found them to be well made and heavy enough for their purpose. I actually removed them for my application. The fan moves a lot of air and is very quiet in my book. So overall I am thrilled with it. Longevity is a key issue with these fans and I can't attest to that as I just bought it and it's been running for a few weeks. Hopefully it won't disappoint. Other than that I'd buy it again in a second.

Ken H. Burres: I bought this fan to help cool down our attic in which I put a bedroom and office. In the past I would not have been able to work in there for the majority of the day due to the heat. We installed this in an attic window that needed replacing anyway and the results are pretty good so far. I installed it on a 75-80 degree day and set the thermostat to about 87. At that setting it ran for most of the afternoon. A slight turn up to 90 would turn it off. With the other attic windows open, it was quite tolerable in the attic to work. We'll see about the heat of summer (NJ).
Note, I chose to purchase a cheaper thermostat than the optional one because it was much cheaper (Ventamatic XXFIRESTAT 10-Amp).
I knew there would be some noise from the fan, but I think this is a little louder than I like. During the day it is tolerable, but I think if it kicks on at night it will be too loud. It is more the fins rattling in the front (or perhaps the vertical fin supports) than the motor/fan itself. I may try to add some kind of dampener to them if I can.
There is a gap around the fins that is a little larger than I like as well. We'll see if we have issues with insects...

PVD: Fairly easy to install, with help from a more knowledgeable friend. Seems strong and is doing a good job aerating my barn. My electric bill at the barn went up just $3-4/month.
