ProHistorianProHistorian: Great at first but DOES NOT LAST. These are really nice looking and work so very well right out of the box. The issue is quality. They will not last. I have had 2 and both failed in less than a year. One failed when the plastic insert that guides the worm/screw broke. It is pinned in place so obviously not repairable. The next one I got was on 8/11/18 so it was barely 5 months old when it failed. On this on the chrome guide bar that is supposed to be permanently attached to the main housing came loose. When looking at other 1 star review, this seems to be a common failure for these.

Very disappointing as I really liked these when they were working. We have wine with dinner pretty much every evening so if you are only going to use it occasionally it might last a few years. If you drink wines that use synthetic corks I would REALLY stay away from this as it is just not up to the task.

Back to the search for a good, high quality opener... :-(

Update 1/1/2019 - Still searching for a high quality version of this. Have not found it yet. Bought another of these because it was on sale pretty cheap. Same experience. Lasted about 9 months and then the guide pin pulled...

trailhound: This is an edited review: After returning the first one I bought (see original review why), the company emailed me and asked if it could send me a new one for free. It said the first one was defective and gave me instructions on the best way to use it. The service rep asked if I wouldn't mind updating my review if I was pleased with the second one. I'm happy to oblige and say the second one is working per the recommended instructions (to make sure it is opened all the way when you place it around the bottle and to slowly use the lever). I'm pleased that it works, but I don't think it will last the many years my Brookstone rabbit lasted. I'll caveat that though with, we are a bottle a night family, so we use our corkscrew often. Just doesn't seem strong enough for the foreseeable frequency of use. I also can't seem to get the corkscrew to reach the center of the cork, but I'm working on it. Recommendation: buy it, if anything for a customer service you can depend on.

The opener I purchased 3 years ago did fail after a couple of months. A replacement was shipped overnight to me. I've now been using that one ever since (almost 3 years)! I open many bottles per week. I love it.

Some people have talked about the screw pushing the cork into the bottle. This happened to me recently. I discovered it was out of sync (it was ready for me to remove the cork from the screw, so the latter was not spinning). All I had to do was completely tip the handle up and down a couple of times, I heard the mechanism click, and everything works perfectly now. I haven't installed the spare screw yet. After 3 years it may be time. It still works great with real cork, but is getting a little difficult with the artificial ones. I can't say enough good things!

I've owned at least 4 rabbit style wine openers prior to this one. I think this may be the best. I've opened 7 or 8 bottles at this point. My thoughts in order of increasing importance:
1) It looks great...nice to have.
2) The packaging is beautiful and would help make this a very nice gift.

Joseph Zmuda: The Rabbit Wine Opener looks and feels as good when you get it as it does in the photos. This is a high-quality product that is almost a work of art, both in design and how it operates. Somewhere I read that it is not supposed to be used on composite corks, which to me means the plastic ones that you often see. Not true. It goes through those corks as well as, or better than, the natural types. When you get the opener, which comes in a presentation-type storage box with an extra replacement corkscrew, you'll find an instruction card that features 6 steps to using the opener. Very simple instructions with pictures. However, what is not written or even hinted at (at least that I could find) is the 7th step that everyone needs to know, because this makes the opener twice as good as any other type of opener that I've ever used. What people do after they remove a cork from a bottle is manually unscrew it from the corkscrew. But the HQY Best Rabbit wine opener does that for you automatically if you go on to what I call step 7.
