Honeywell 50250-S True HEPA Air Purifier - Eliminate Allergens and Impurities from the Air in Your Home

Michael T. DoyleMichael T. Doyle: I just bought this unit for the third time in 20 years. In the mid-90s in Brooklyn, I bought it to help with cat allergies and kept it for 6 years. In the mid-2000s in Chicago, I bought it to help with dirty downtown-apartment air and kept it for 5 years. Now, I have it once again in a Chicago apartment to help with a "sick air" residential building (dust/mold/dirt from hallway and facade renovations.) It has never failed me. Like the other 80 percent of reviewers giving four or five stars all say, it just works. Like, works in the way that products used to work 20 years ago.

The people complaining that it's an old, bulky design that's a little louder than more modern units? Good! The last "more modern" unit I had--a Holmes mini-tower HEPA purifier--allowed so much air to bypass the HEPA filter, it spit out black soot on my walls and floors. It ended up on a one-way trip down the garbage chute after two years of my partner and me wondering why we always felt sick and congested even though we ran the unit 24/7. I opened up the unit and found everything inside caked with thick black gunk from all the bypassed air.

Yes, on Turbo the Honeywell 50250 sounds like a 737...

Thierry Senecal: Does exactly what it claims to do. Bit on the noisy side. But it will eat odors of all kinds in short order (especially when set on maximum output). We live next to a smoker and so whenever he lights up and some smoke comes through, we move the unit to the room where the smoke can be smelled (the handle on the top is comfortable and even though the unit IS large, it's not very heavy) and fire it up for a few minutes. Smoke gone. Sometimes, if the smell is bad, we leave on all night on low setting next to the kids room to keep the air clean. It's a white noise kind of noise although our eldest does say he can hear it quite clearly, they still fall asleep to the unit and it keeps the air clean. If it was more quiet...this unit would earn a 5 star rating.

kindler: I have had this product running in my bedroom for over a year now. It is fabulous! My sleep is better as I'm no longer bothered by airborne allergens, and, if anything, the quiet hum of it running has added a little bit of white noise allowing me to sleep through the occasional outside sound which might otherwise have awoken me.

I can tell how effective it is as, not being much of a duster, I have not dusted in the entire year and, instead of the usual felt carpet of accumulated dust, there is barely a sprinkle. I'm well aware that as an allergy sufferer, I should be more attentive to things like dusting as the practice removes allergens, but if this product is able to work in removing allergens for a slob like me, imagine how well it will work for you.

Julia: I had had a similar Honeywell Hepa filter that was purchased more than 20 years ago. I was unable to find replacement filters so I stopped using it about 3 years ago when we moved to a new energy efficient home. This spring, my whole family started suffering from allergies. My 8 year old son developed mild constant asthma as well. The filter arrived yesterday. Within seconds of plugging it in, I felt as though the house had been infused with oxygen. I can breathe so much easier, and I had not realized that my breathing had been suffering.

At full blast, there is a loud constant noise, but it's from the air movement. I can't hear any motor noise at all. The air movement helps with air circulation as well. I can run the air conditioner at a higher temperature than I was without the filer.

Amazon Customer: It is eating up the dust from air and who knows what else (looking at the washable HEPA filter full of dust was impressive and scary realizing we had been breathing it all in before we got that gadget.

It is Ok loud on its minimal setting which we use during the day. It is easy to carry within the house. it does take care of about 700-900 sq ft surface. House guests were all, spontaneously, remarking on the good air quality. That is noteworthy, because after a while we just got used to it and were not noticing the improvement, but it does do its work and I recommend it especially in houses close to the streets and where you cannot keep the windows open and ventilate at all times.

M C: I've been suffering from breathing problems since flu season hit and also developed an allergic reaction to our new pet. It was so bad that I ended up with an inhaler. I plugged this in a few hours ago in our large living room area (which contains a wood stove and a pet cage) and I can breath easily for the first time in months! I'm going to give it a few weeks to see how it holds up and am seriously considering getting another for the bedroom area of the house as well. I don't find the lower settings noisy. Maybe in a small space it would be, but this is a larger room size unit. The amount of noise is a good trade off for being able to take full breaths without coughing or getting stuffed up.

As for the price, it was a great buy. I got it for about $160 which is much cheaper than at my local Home Depot, and it was delivered right to my door for free. It was worth the wait for it when it was briefly out of stock. It is also much lighter than I expected. I can easily move it from room to room or lift it up to open the filter area.

Snoopy1: The first thing you must understand when reading reviews for the Honeywell 50250-S Air Purifier is that there is no consistency on which models the reviews are written about and many of the reviews are more than three years old (presumably even before this model was released). I just purchased this product (delivered June 2012) and have had a full day of experience running it and here are some preliminary thoughts: 1. While it is true that this does not have a "permanent" HEPA filter, it is represented to last 3-5 years depending upon your specific useage. I don't know about you, but I am ok with replacing the filter every 3-5 years that is so important to the quality of my life indoors. The cost of replacement is currently about $47 for the HEPA filter. The pre-filters are sold by Honeywell for between $11.95 to $16.95 depending upon whether you want the extra odor filtering and these are really three filters for the large round air purifiers (perforated sheet that makes three of the required size). 2. Noise: From the reviews, I was expecting a jet engine sound at the higher fan setting. That is overstating the case. There is no question you can hear the unit at work from other...
