FireKing SureSeal SS102 1/2 Hour Fireproof & Waterproof Safe Chest

Just another sane, rational FloridianJust another sane, rational Floridian: I got this unit primarily to use as a waterproof/fireproof place to store my computer backups (personal, not business) and whatever else was important but not critical enough to go in the safe deposit box. In short: protection against fire & water, not protection against theft.

Even though I read the size and weight info in the ad, this unit is still bigger and heavier than I thought it would be. And it should be noted that the instructions say that this should be stored on its side, not with the handle facing up like a suitcase. Keep that in mind when you consider where you want to store it.

Overall, I'm pleased with the unit. I keep it under the futon in our guest room, on its side, with the keys and instructions in a baggie taped to the top. As others have noted, the keys are not exactly super-high quality, so if you leave a key in the lock for convenience, you run the risk of the key getting accidentally snapped off in the lock, and a locksmith bill to fix it.

If you can live with the limitations, this is a reasonably priced option for storing valuables. Recommended!

john: This is very nice case in every way. Compared to similar Sentry and 1 Alerts, at local stores, it wins easily. But it's sooo heavy, at 28 pounds, plus contents. The 0.27 cf case exactly fits 8.5" wide paper, but if paper is in an envelope you must arch it up, or down slightly to fit width. Be sure you have a place for it before buying. It is just too heavy to carry to/from the attic or crawl space unless you're a weight lifter. We even considered hiding in an inground sprinkler valve box, but it's just too large and heavy to fit easily, and may not be 100% weathertight. Think of carrying your full size computer tower, but heavier. It is too big to hide easily in our house or garage, and too obvious for a thief to overlook. The lock is fine for keeping kids out, but a thief would break easily. We bought with great expectations of cancelling our safe deposit box. But after considering the weight and difficulty hiding, we're keeping our safe deposit box. We won't ship back as it's just too heavy to rewrap, carry and pay for return. JTS: The overall construction of this fire/water proof box is impressive! The box is heavy, 28.5 pounds for the SS103 and 56 pounds for the SS104. I'm a big guy, but when I picked each up for the first time I really was taken aback by the density and weight. I was pleasantly surprised to discover they put a pneumatic piston on the larger SS104 to prevent the really heavy lid from slamming on your fingers, not so (and not needed) on the smaller SS103. Both boxes advertise they float, even when full. This is something I was not aware of prior to purchase. The one piece, inset, water gasket looks to be highly effective and precisely aligned. The internal dimensions are EXACT as published which is good and bad. You are getting exactly what you paid for, but, for the smaller box SS103: If you intend to have your papers in a tabbed file folder, binder or anything wider than the exact width of a letter sized piece of paper (8.5in/21.59cm), forget it, it will not fit flat without curling up on the side. (8.5 inches/21.59cm, exactly, for paper width (what they call depth of the box) is all that you get). To solve this inability to put docs in a binder or folder, I metal clip the top of each set...

JLM: I spent a long time choosing this chest. We needed a safe for home and I looked at many reviews on Amazon and other sites. Some people wrote reviews about safes that they had trouble closing. Other people had trouble with hinges. Some said theirs were too small for 8 1/2 x 11 pages or that they had trouble with the keys or that theirs lacked a handle. Many had no troubles or complaints at all. What we wanted to do was have a safe inside a safe. Odd, I know. The bank in our town is closing and we wanted to put all the stuff from our safe deposit box inside of our enormous gun safe. The gun safe is like a bank vault with a bolt locking system on all four door edges. It is fireproof and waterproof, so I wanted a safe to go inside that was also fireproof and waterproof. I chose this one. It had only positive reviews.
I am pleased with the construction. The front latches work easily as do the keys. It had space inside for a 9 x 12 envelope to lay almost flat and had plenty of room for all the items we had to put in it.
