Extech Moisture Meter with Pin and Pinless Technology for Accurate Readings

Q Row: I don’t like the on/off button as it easily gets bumped and will turn on when you don’t want to. The depth on the pinless mode seems really good. I like that I can set it down on a flat surface and then back up and take a picture without having to hold onto it like I do with protimeter. Unit has been durable and reliable. It would be nice if they added an accessory jack. Overall good value. I’ve bought several now.

Mattias: Best budget choise acording to tests.
I like that it only has one setting for wood and one for building materials, instead of hardwood/softwood etc.
Would have given 5 stars if the display was backlit and it came with a cary case.
Has both pinns and sensor.
The sensor can measure down to 1 inch in depth.

A budget moisture meter can only be used to see if one area has more moisture than another area. A budget meter can not give accurate readings in %. If you want somewhat accurate readings in % then you need a Protometer Survey Master or better and they cost around 850 euros.

Jiylees: If you need to have an accurate damp meter, you need to be prepared to spend a lot of money (hundreds) - otherwise all this price range will get you is a rough idea of which area is wetter than the next, but won't accurately tell you if the area in question is cause for concern.
At the time when we bought this we had workmen in the house who had a proper damp meter, so we borrowed it to test against this one and it wasn't really up to scratch.

It is no use for what we need it for - but if you had say a leek in the house and didn't know where that leek was coming from then this would be accurate enough to find the source.

Victor Henderson: The pinless function works fine however the pins continually lose contact. I have to constantly retighten the pins but they are not reliable. I can now only use it as a pinless meter. Also, because the display is not backlit, it is very difficult to read. I use this meter in Crawlspaces and attics quite frequently. Not happy with it’s performance.

Tom M: I use this every single day while performing home inspections. In fact, it is probably my favorite tool. The problems I have uncovered and the knowledge I have been able to provide with this has payed for it 100 times.Having both the pin and pinless mode is imperative. If it hasn't rained in a few days they without pinless you would never know if there is still leaking. Results are highly reproducible and accurate. One of the nicest things is the fact there is a chart on the back with levels of moisture for different materials/ modes. This is helpful as the pin/pinless modes read moisture differently therefore 30% on one is different from the other.
The beeping is a nice touch in hard to reach areas. It would be nice if you could silence it though as can be a bit annoying while using for extended periods.
Lastly, the power butting could be moved or redesigned. I like to carry this with me a lot and is easily turned on in a pocket. Not a huge deal but have gone through a few batts quickly when it gets wedged against something in my tool bag.

P.S. pin cover is hard to open but that does prevent it from getting lost/ someone sticking themselves. I find it easiest to push...

Chris D: I'm completely let down by this piece of equipment. Purchased in May of 2014. About 2 months later the moisture sensor on the back came loose while measuring moisture at a job site. I decided to re-attach it rather than return since the connections were still attached and it appeared to be more of an issue with the glue or epoxy.

Fast forward yesterday at a job site and the meter was simply dead - would not turn on. (Also tested with a brand new battery.) Called Extech and there is no reset so if it didn't turn on it was dead. Worst part is I found that there is only a 1 year warranty and that my $500 purchase is now basically a paperweight - after only 15 months.

As a supervisor this equipment got very little use, I was the only user, and it lived in its original foam padded carrying case. (If this meter had been in a technicians kit and experienced the rigors of used on a daily basis, my opinion may be different.)

During my call to support, Extech offered a flat fee repair cost of $175 with the disclaimer "if it can be repaired". The challenge is do you invest another $175 plus shipping both directions on an apparently faulty product, or invest into a...
