a customer: This is my favorite book in my little collection of instructional books for the hobby painter. The author is an accomplished artist painting still lives in a traditional realist style. The book starts from scratch but tells you everything about how to complete a painting. I particularly like how the author treats the reader as an adult. He doesn't make absolute rules out of personal habits, as so many authors in this area unfortunately do ("don't use black paint", "paint loosely", "use a limited palette", to name a few of the most common of these [not that there is anything intrinsically wrong with this, but you can certainly also create great paintings in a detailed style using a full palette including black]), and he is more concerned with giving you the tools to find your own personal way of painting, which is exactly what such a book should do, at least in my opinion. And if something is just difficult, such as accurately seeing values in strong colors, the author will just tell you this, too.

The book contains a generous selection of artwork, mostly but not exclusively by the author, so it can also be enjoyed as a coffee table book. I believe its instructional parts...

Elizabeth B. Tucker: As a classically trained artist and teacher I have a lot of books in my library. I use them both for myself and as teaching tools for my students. Without a doubt, "The Art of Still Life: A Contemporary Guide to Clasical Techniques, Composition, and Painting in Oil" is the best one I have as it combines most of my resources into one volume. If I were to write a book on classical painting, this would be what I would have written.
In this book Casey covers all of the major and minor topics of painting. He is not dogmatic and shares loads of work from other painters, both contemporary and older masters. He treats the reader as an intelligent person who wants to understand, for example, in talking about form and planes, Casey shows how light works on the planes of an object and how objects that are further from the light source are affected. . He explains about color, science and art without it feeling overwhelming. He shows drawings in progress and how he makes marks to keep him on track. He talks about composition and unity.
