Storm: I am really struggling with this “guide” book. It’s reads more like a text book. I want to like it, but I can’t help comparing it to other guide books I have used (I love Official Guides for theme parks and Rick Steves for Europe). I am a huge fan of planning vacations by reading guide books cover to cover 2 and 3 times before my actual trips (which have all been incredibly successful). I usually love reading them and using them to make all of my family’s trip plans, but I do not find this book enjoyable.

It’s organization is inconsistent. Just look at the hotel section for the Big Island for instance. I won’t bore you pointing out my issues.
The flipping between red and black ink also seems inconsistent. And what does bolding words mean in this book? Sometimes it’s a particular business, or a place, or an activity (whale-watching tours”), or a phrase (“fly directly to the island of choice”, “year-round temperature”) in the middle of a sentence. There is no explanation on how this book is written.
They have a 1-3 star rating system, but NO EXPLANATION of what the stars mean (how they were determined by the authors).

Grey Wolf Books, U.S.A.: This great guide became my substitute for an actual trip to Hawaii during this pandemic year. Climb to the top of Kilauea, visit the telescopes, go to the Pearl Harbor Memorial, all without having to stay in expensive hotels or pay the airfare! Seriously, this up-to-date, accurate guide, with map included earns its reputation as the best. Clear writing and lots of personal, helpful advice.

North Carolina Editor: I’m so glad I ordered this. We’ll be renting cars and exploring several of the islands, and this guide is full of the information I needed, with maps making it easier to locate names of key sites and their locations. A-plus to Frommers for one of the most useful travel guides I’ve found in a long time.

Joseph S.: We used this book to prepare for trip to Hawaii (the big island) and Oahu. Some of the things the book didn't tell us, which would have been useful: 1) If you land in Kona and stay on the west coast of Hawaii, there is LOTS of lava. The west side beaches are not golden sand, they had lava rocks. Some more some less. But if you drive up north (go visit Lapakahi) You will find beautiful sand beaches on the north edge. 2) Even if you're staying in Kalua Kona, you SHOULD drive 92 miles to the visitor center in Volcano National Park and drive down Chain of Craters Road. It's other-worldly. 3) On Oahu, don't ask your phone to take to Pearl Harbor. It will take you to the active military base, which will refuse you entrance (unless you have a military ID). Instead ask to be taken to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. That works. ... Because the section on Hawaii is split into sections of the island, the section on the West coast really did not clue us in that we should go to the north tip to find beautiful beaches on the big island. And obviously it didn't give the warning I gave above about searching for Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.
