Green Girl: Maybe the book came into my life at the right time, but I wish I would have learned about it earlier in my journey. It’s not a miracle cure but a data/science driven techniques and approach to managing pain.

Donna McFarlane: This is the first book on pain that is truly relatable. I felt as though the book was written about and for me.

The others, that I read kept me at arms’ length with their accusatory, “your problem, not mine,” approach.

Explain Pain is user friendly, relatable, immensely helpful, and written with a sense of compassion, understanding and good fun.

Dr. V.S Ganapathy: It's a good book for those who seeks to know about chronic pain.

Kindle-Kunde: Very frustrating, but the eBook version is not readable via the kindle app on eihter my android tablet nor my android mobile (in contrast to what is promissed here). And I even cant send an official complaint or anything to the vendor, so I'm stuck with a not readable ebook (it is very very small and cannot be enlarged by any means) without any refunds whatsoever. After I bought the book paperbased I'm fascinated and like the book a lot. But the ebook version is absolutely not recomendable!

A. Murphy: 25 years of back pain - herniated disc - and now a recent discectomy surgery - so I've lived with pain for a long time. This book does a great job of explaining how the brain "creates" pain, how the sensors work, and some simply suggestions for changing how our brain reacts to pain. It was suggested by my physical therapist, and despite being expensive, I'm really glad I chose to purchase it. I've forwarded it to friends as well.

My sciatic pain in my hip was a great example of the brain creating pain. The L4 nerve root was being impinged by a 1/2" herniation of the disc. However, the pain appeared in my hip. There was literally nothing wrong with my hip, but that didn't stop me from feeling it there or from feeling like I should stretch the hip to relieve the pain. However, that was just my brain's misinterpretation of the signal from the nerve. Fascinating stuff to study!

Dr. EBG: My one star refers strictly to the Kindle e-book formatting and NOT to the content. I have no way to review the content, since it is unreadable, even on the newest Kindle Fire. The font is so tiny, that it is impossible to read without a magnifying glass. There are no font size adjustments as in every other Kindle e-book on every device. To see font in a larger size, you have to double click each paragraph to open a pop-out box, one by one, and then double click the box to close it. If the paragraph continues in another column or page, you have to use the same procedure. If there was a way to return an e-book, I would. Since I really want to learn Dr. Butler's methods of pain management, I may have to bite the bullet and purchase the $90 134-page, hard copy book. Shame on Amazon and the publisher for not including font size adjustments as in every other e-book.

Kindle Customer: A little over a year ago, I was in a motorcycle accident. A month ago, I was diagnosed with Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome. This book helped me understand what pain really was.

Pain was preventing me from living my life. As a writer, it kept me from writing my novels because my wrist and shoulder couldn't tolerate being on a computer for more than an hour at a time. But Explain Pain, helped me to understand what was going on with my body. Knowing that the pain wasn't a signal that I was reinjuring the area helped. There were also suggestions as to how to work up to doing things you liked to do, such as taking walks, writing, and how to conquer your pain. The biggest lesson, pushing through the pain is NOT the right strategy.

The medical terminology and concepts were dumbed down for a layman like me. There were plenty of pictures to help explain the concepts being described as well as detailed examples. There wasn't a concept I read I didn't understand by the end of the chapter.

If you have chronic pain, this is the book for you. Acute pain is different; it's generally due to an injury. But chronic pain is debilitating and understanding it is the path to...

L. Smith: This is a fantastic book to help people understand the terribly complex subject of chronic pain. I hate that the Kindle version prompted such poor ratings, because the actual content of the book is excellent. I have the print version. Refer to reviews of the original version, most of which are 5-star ratings. As a psychologist treating chronic pain, and training soon-to-be psychologists, I'm always looking to deepen my understanding of pain processes, and strategies for self management. This book is incredibly helpful. In addition to increasing my own knowledge, this book also provides great examples for explaining the subject to others. Since it does not go into too much intimidating biological detail, it's digestible by a wide range of educational backgrounds. I love that for such a serious and challenging subject, the authors manage to include ample humor to make it an entertaining read, as well as informative. If you're leery of the price, search for videos of the authors presenting this material on the Web - watching a couple presentations (well, in truth, more than a couple...I became a little obsessed one Friday night...that's just HOW impressed I was!) inspired me to go...
