By: Eric Manheimer MD (Author)
This book, Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital (The Inspiration for the NBC Drama New Amsterdam) by Eric Manheimer MD, is one of the best Doctor-Patient Relations Books available. It is easy to read, understand, and is of high quality in terms of binding and pages. Readers are sure to be satisfied with this book overall.HeWhoReads: I'm retired from a long career in the medical tech world. After several decades working within the bowels of some amazing hospitals, including a couple of decades at a major trauma center in the southwest, I can attest to the very real portrait Dr Mannheimer describes. The patients, staff and the politics of this world have been well represented. Great read.

Elizabeth Hutton: What made this book a good read was the stories of the people. However, the author did a good job of delving into the lives of his patients.

redzenskyca: I just started reading - through a few chapters. Very good stories if you like the personal - it follows a specific patient story from start to finish as much as there can be a finish. I watched and enjoyed the "New Amsterdam" program on NBC and kept seeing the reference in the credits to this book - I finally purchased and I am glad I did.

Mrs. Nicola Fusco: I bought this after watching New Amsterdam, but the tv show is better than the book

Susiegirl: Came to this after viewing the 'New Amsterdam' series on my Kindle. It is very well written and atmospheric. Why four stars? Well, sometimes I need a bit more help with some of the terminology.... and the Spanish is not always translated... and where it has been, it's only partial. Though this improves as the book progresses. BTW I now realise that they should have cast an older actor as the medical director in the TV series. In fact most of the heads of department are far too young for the responsibilities they carry. What is this obsession with youth in the biz? Anyhow getting back to the book, some moments, for me, were profound. It has helped me understand far better what my cousin, currently getting chemo and radiotherapy, is going through. Do not expect the book to mirror events in the series though; clearly it is inspired by this book, but drama requires constant ratcheting up, episode by episode, and this book is about real life. I couldn't put it down; it's such a good read.

Reverse Engineer: Outstandingly humane, in a wild mix of the medical catch basin in New York City. So refreshing to see the care, concern under a huge, complex hospital.Diagnoses achieved, patients saved, patients in extremis, transplant recipients and donors.
