Kabam: I found myself wishing I had the outdoors skills and emergency-responder abilities that Grange describes so elegantly, simply so I could join the teams of admirable men and women sacrificing daily to help people, save lives, and preserve the environment. I am a physician (albeit not in an emergency or critical care field) so I know the medical situations Grange describes are real. I appreciate his willingness to open up and share what his experiences have taught him and how they've shaped his growth and life trajectory. He writes about the painful as well as the uplifting parts in equally engaging ways. He doesn't pontificate, which I appreciated, and yet still made me want to sign up for a wilderness hike and get my ACLS certification renewed. I learned so many things I didn't know: like the National Park Service has a SWAT team. I loved the profiles Grange includes of all the rangers, paramedics, instructors, SAR personnel, and medical directors He has met. I would love to meet Grange, if just to shake his hand.

A. Backman: The author shows his love for nature, people and parks in equal parts. There is a lot of detail but it is used as an asset not something to get in the way of spirited story telling.
