R. D. Ashby: This fire starter is everything I expected it to be. I have no trouble getting the sparks to fly and easily light up all sorts of tinder, including damp wood shavings. I might buy myself another two or three, just for the fun of it.

Richard L. Evans: Started my first two fires this last weekend using this without the magnesium using foraged fuel. Works great. At first it might seem like the sparks are not that great but give it some time. Once the rod wears down a bit the sparks fly. Have used the magnesium as well and of course it helps a lot just wanted to try it without "cheating" hehe and works great.

Scott S: I had high hopes for this thing. It’s maybe a bit pricey, relatively speaking of course, but reviews were great, and I wanted to upgrade some gear so I pulled the trigger on the Kamper.

Within three strikes I decided to buy the firefly as well. This is a good size, a bit bigger than you might be used to, but it is a piece of equipment. It’s just solid, well done, and finely executed. It’s a tool. It does everything you need it to, and it does it well. There’s no gimmicks here, just quality material and craftsmanship.

I wasn’t expecting the Ferro rod with a relatively light strike to send sparks four feet down into my carpet but that’s exactly what happened.

Do yourself a favor; stop buying junk, stop falling for the gimmicks, buy a nice piece of equipment that will last a long time. You deserve this tool, really.

For the occasional user, or light packer, I’d say Fire Fly. If you spend some time in the bush, you can’t go wrong with the Kamper. If you’re a beast of a man and forest dweller, the Trekker.

chris: I have many ferro rods as well as mag for starting fires. Many are small and most mag ferro combos are the square type with a small ferro on the side that u would get at Walmart. I found out a couple years ago when your hands are freezing it is so difficult to strike those little ferro rods with any accuracy. This thing is pretty big with the handle but it’s well worth it for something that could save your life in low temps. It throws sparks likes nobody’s business! I can start a fire with 3 strikes or less with all my rods but like I said when my hands were froze it took me almost 10 minutes to get my tender on fire and each strike hurt my froze hands. Although I haven’t used this one in such a situation I’m sure it would be so much easier the handle alone would make it so much better. Also the handle could be shaved for a small tinder pile if it’s all you had. I would only do this if you can’t find any dry wood to shave anywhere however. They make an even larger one but for hiking this is perfect size. The striker itself is way better than most. I always use the spine of my knife but this is still a great backup.

Terry Allen: About 25 years ago, I had a similar fire starter purchased at a gift expo from the man who made them. I loved it, used it for every recreational and cooking fire. I lost it in a move, and lost the contact info. My backyard fire activity has increased the last couple of years, and I was pleasantly surprised to find a good variety from Fire Fast. It arrived promptly, the magnesium is easy to shave, the striker produces sparks just fine, and I get a nice fire right away! Very satisfactory, I would definitely recommend them!
