123876495guy: Just finished it and I am seriously considering reading it again. There is no way to quantify all that you will learn reading this book.

PWB: I’ve been going through a difficult time in my life health wise. It was an inspiring book to read as I climbed my own “mountains.”

Kathy Noble: I really enjoyed this book! I am a dayhiker myself; but could relate to much of what the author stated.

Kindle Customer: I’ve done a bit of backpacking and found this book true to my own experience. I’ve also studied a bit of Asian philosophy so the comparisons along the trail of letting go of the great rat race and experiencing life moment by moment rang true. But my probably poor understanding of the Tao is that a true seeker always experiences, at some point in their quest, Nothingness and that’s one of the high points of the philosophy because it also contains the opposite bit as well, Everything. I’m surprised that an Asian philosophy professor didn’t recognize this. But overall an excellent read. I loved the smattering of Asian poetry throughout and the lovely thoughtful moments along the trail. Makes me want to hike the JMT (John Muir Trail).

Susan Carey: This book was an excellent read ...lots of (maybe
even too much )description of the trail.
It gave me a lot to think about.

Mel: There’s a lot in this book. There’s the angst of youth, the fear of death and all the life in between. Partly a great coming of age book, a study on looking at your demise, a travelogue and a philosophy book. I live it

Liz: This was the first book I tried after a long stretch of abandoning my love for reading. When trying to pick up a book to get back into things I picked this due to my love for hiking and the outdoors. I absolutely loved the story and description of nature, but found myself skimming over the long winded historical lectures from Syd. A great red especially if you’re into hiking and history of trails!

Edward G.: This novel is quite out of the ordinary- well written but with philosophical overtones that the writer uses with his Uncle Syd- You will either be completely absorbed in the story or not depending on your view of the extraordinary- hard to stop reading such a heartfelt saga-Bravo to the author

Robert Dawes: Prompted recall of great days on the John Muir trail

United Kingdom on Aug 20, 2023

Ron S.: Within the first few pages you are exposed to the predictable plot of the neophyte hiker teaming with the wise experienced protagonist. All of the typical tension and consequences that we have read before. The twosome walk into the depths of the John Muir trail at the same time try to dive deep into to the meaning of life. This is ambitious. What we get is mostly armchair philosophy and surface spirituality. "What if this was the last day of your life?". But as a detailed narrative of the experience of hiking the JMT the book shines. As an armchair long distance hiker myself I was immersed in the trail and the descriptions painted a picture that allowed a taste of the experience. I felt in a small way I was there with them even though I cringed at times at some of their choices. The 3D map drawings showing their progress along the trail with the corresponding elevation gain and loss found me wanting to adjust my own pack for the chapter ahead. It's worth reading as an adventurous romp on the trail.
