Matt Vinez: I bought this book for my 6 year old son, hoping it would be good. The story is really cute, and the artwork is great! Purchased used in "like new" condition and was very happy with that description. My little boy loves this story, and my 3 year old daughter likes it as well. My son frequently asks me to check to see if there's a sequel written yet. He wants the fox to meet the sea monster shown on the map! :-)

Christina Findlay: This is not written by the Fan Brothers, but they illustrated. I found the story’s pace was too slow, both due to the amount of text on each page as well as the illustrations being less detailed than some of their other works, like lots of broad panoramic of nature with not as much detail as you could get from a city-scape. I was overall less interested in the illustrations than their other works, though still beautiful and skillful with several highly enjoyable scenes. I also wasn’t the biggest fan of the story itself. It’s about a fox who has a lot of questions, and maybe the author was trying to leave the reader with lots of questions as well, as part of the story experience, but didn’t handle it in a technically skillful way. Like for example, mid story, there is a reference to the fox being hungry on a boat with other animals, but having to eat vegetarian. So then I’m thinking, ohh, is the fox going to try and eat some of his shipmates? Then food is referenced again at the end, about friendship being about eating meals together, but some of the characters disagree. It was weird. Also, the fox hopes to find other foxes on his journey that can answer all his...

Thinkblush: As always the illustrations in the Fan Brothers books are breathtaking (enough the just stare at them as a picture book really) however, story line was a bit lost on me and I found I didn’t quite enjoy reading it to my little one!

Happy Camper: This is a lovely book except for the chemical smell coming from the textured book jacket. It felt slightly damp when I received it so was probably newly printed and it reeked, leaving a bitter taste in my mouth just from the smell. After 4 days of airing out the jacket on the porch, it still smells. It's been banished to the shop so that the other books I ordered don't pick up the smell. Disappointing as the cover illustration isn't found in the book, although there are several other views of the ship. Without the jacket, the cover is green with a nice embossed antler-anchor. I guess whatever the textured the paper jacket with caused the problem?

LindaB: I adored The Night Gardener by the Fan Brothers. Here is another beautifully created story with their illustrations, this time written by Daska Slater. We first meet Marco, a beautiful fox, a questioner, with no other fox companions who will answer his questions. Or when they do, it is with disinterest. He asks things like “Why do some songs make you happy and others make you sad?” This “antlered” ship is immediately intriguing as it wanders to land, with three deer disembarking and sharing that they’re lost. Marco, a few pigeons, a bear and a moose greet them and discover a seaworthy crew is needed. Marco thinks he must join them to search for other foxes in order to answer some of his questions. The pigeon, Victor, says his flock will also join in, “to have adventures.” The adventure begins, and the questions continue as they work hard, then venture into a great storm. “Why is water so wet?” The rest of the story satisfies as challenges are met and overcome and the mysteries of the voyage are resolved, but we are left with questions. The map on the endpapers helps the reader follow the voyage, and guess what might be next. It’s a fascinating and gorgeous book!

Linda L. Oliphant: What a delightful book and story! As with The Night Gardner, there is amazing art on every single page. AND there is a map on both the inside front and back covers...to trace and follow this seafaring adventure. On top of it all, not only does the book have a beautiful jacket; but it also looks beautiful "naked". I mean, what can be better than that? This is a wonderfully told story of friendship and inquisitiveness of one little fox who has soooo many questions that he goes on a sailing adventure with the most unlikely of crew in search for answers. For me, it was the illustrations that tied the story together. The blending and shading of colour is beautiful. But even more, it is the depiction and expressions of the animal characters that bring the story to life. Why is it that a story of talking animals is more memorable, powerful and seems to make so much more sense than one with people?

Joan AlmondJoan Almond: #TheAntleredShip #DashkaSlater #EricAnd TerryFan #BeachLorneBooks The Antlered Ship by Dashka Slater and illustrated by The Fan Brothers arrived in bookstores today. That was the announcement on Facebook. I knew my copy was due to arrive. I swung into gear. It was time to celebrate! The call came from the lobby saying I had a parcel. Anticipation rose. I enjoyed every minute of the book; it's poetic flow its endearing characters, the quest, and its beautiful message. The Fan Brothers magically capture detail, picture by picture, painting by painting, taking us into Marco's adventure. The illustrator/artists add subtle humour, and emotion when needed, bundling it up in buckets of creativity. No detail was left out, right down to the materials used on the cover. I've been to Sea Today and it Was Quite the Adventure! This is no ordinary book. We'll be reading this one for many years to come I expect.

LMML: The story and the art are fully enhanced by each other, a sheer delight for me, a gift I'm delighted to give. I bought it for a girl age 7.5 who has just moved to a new town and new school (again), so every day is still an adventure and how to find friends to have adventures with is still very fresh..
