Midwest Devil: I've been playing guitar for a long time. New to slide. Picked these up to experiment with. Wasn't sure which finger I'd use. They don't fit on my ring finger, so they went on my pinky. They work fine.

Anglian Traveller: The original blues players in the Mississippi Delta area cut the neck off a beer bottle and inserted the little finger of the left hand into the bottleneck to use as a slide on their guitar strings.
In more modern times, you can buy this product – or similar – to do the same job. For the asking price, these bottleneck slides are OK. There’s a trad glass slide and an unbreakable steel one as an alternative: they do basically the same thing but the sound tone from each is subtly different (the sound of the guitar however will make more of a difference than the slide material). NB the amazon listing shows a photo of the slide being mounted on the index finger: this is incorrect. The little finger - or occasionally the ring finger – is generally used, and usually just the end-joint, as otherwise your other fingers will get in the way. Try it and you’ll soon discover this is the best way.
Slides are also used in country music and other styles. If you’re new to the technique you’ll need to learn to use open tunings, as the standard guitar tuning won’t sound right.
Fortunately in my case my finger is the right size to fit snugly into these...

Ian Lipson: 4/5 stars on this one because when they arrived both worked fantastically, and probably would still work great today had they not designed them so that they can be fit into your ears. While walking around my house with the glass one lodged in my outer ear, it slipped out and shattered on my tile floor. Had to throw it away because it no longer worked. The metal one is less susceptible to such incidents. Good product overall.
